The other reason to keep the original packaging is that when you come to re-sell the reader, having the original box will significantly increase the price you'll get for it.

There is no need to keep all the boxes if you don't want to. Simply cut out the serial number from the box and store it with the original documents that came with the item. Then throw out the box.

I also keep an electronic record on the PC of the serial numbers and model numbers of all major appliances and electronics purchased.

Glad you got your issue worked out, but it doesn't sound like it was a Sony problem. Appears to be a problem with the store you bought the item from.

But I like Sony. :-( I think you just got a bad experience this time, but generally sony makes pretty decent products.

Usually their products are good, but i have never had very good customer service with them , it is like they don't care about you once you buy a product.

Anyways, just glad to have my ereader back , glad i had my books all backed up ! and i guess i will take it as a lesson well learned , and i bought the extended warranty , it is worth it to not have the darn hassle !

It's Sony's fault. The serial number is on an adhesive strip that can be easily peeled off; and who would know? SN's should be etched into these devices.

No, it is not Sony's fault. The serial number is stuck on the back of the reader and I've never read a single post of the serial number falling off. So really, did someone buy that 600, pull of the serial number, stick it on the box, return it and then Future Shop repackaged it and resold it as new?

Again, Sony's fault for not etching these numbers into these devices. Etched numbers can't be peeled off.

Sorry, WRONG! It's not Sony's fault someone pulled off the serial number sticker and put it on the box.

Yes etched numbers can't be peeled off, but it is a little unreasonable I think to expect this of Sony... especially when the standard in the industry is to use stickers.

It ultimately comes down to a cost versus benefit analysis. Sony currently probably makes the highest quality readers available from a physical perspective (we won't get into software issues). As a result, it makes it tough for Sony to compete on price with Amazon and B&N (Well in the USA anyway). Etching the serial number on the unit would add very little perceived value to the unit (None for the vast majority of buyers I suspect) but will add to the cost. Not a good trade off for Sony.

Look, I have my beefs with Sony (and indeed also with Amazon and B&N); their unwillingness to upgrade the firmware on the PRS-300 and PRS-600 when their competitors have upgraded their firmware fairly often bugs me to no end, and if I don't replace my Jetbook with a Sony, that will be the reason. That being said, lets knock Sony for real issues like that, and not something really minor like using a stick on serial number.

iPod touch is etched and even my cheap $40 Sansa Clip+ is printed on the device under the clip. The gadgets I have with stickers are under the battery covers and difficult to accidentally mistake for a UPC/price tag that should be removed.

I've seen the Sonys and they look like barcodes that should be removed. Nowhere on the sticker does it say it's a serial number and that it shouldn't be removed.

For the prices Sony charges, a few extra pennies for etching won't kill them.

Hardly a minor issue to someone who spent hundreds of dollars on a device that a company is refusing to service because of a peeled off serial number.

Are you sure it's a serial number. I have a sticker on the back of my 505. It has a barcode and a long number on it. It doesn't say "Serial Number", or "S/N", or "do not peel off or you will void your warranty". Definitely Sony's problem. At the very least, they could do an RMA and verify the serial number when it is received.

I've been boycotting sony for at least 5 or 6 years.
They will never get my business, nor will BMG or any other company owned by sony.
