You are right, if you unzip the file first you can read the individual files in notepad, but not if you open the zip file itself in notepad. You will just see the compressed data.

I think I've been running into trouble because I was trying to edit the epub by first changing the .epub to .zip and then once I finished the edits I'd re-zip the folder then change the extension to .epub.

This method gives me a corrupted file error message when I try to open it in the Sony Library. I'd like to edit the code of the pages without using Sigil because for some reason I find that program confusing to use and there is no way to save all opened tabs at once.

Well, I haven't got a Sony or even seen one in real life, but I have prepared and uploaded several ePub format ebooks and have edited a few commercial ebooks.

What I do is to right click on the ebook, and choose open with WinZip. All the folders appear on the WinZip window, and I can open the folders by double clicking on them. I can then copy any file (most often the stylesheet) into another folder and edit it with an HTML editor, then save it, then add the file back into the Winzip window, and finally close WinZip. I have occasionally right clicked on the file and opened it with the HTML editor in situ, but I normally prefer to copy it into another folder and copy the edited file back to overwrite the old version.

With this process I have an edited version of the ebook without having to change its extension and without having to unzip it or rezip it.

I prepare ebooks for upload with a similar process, except that the file I open is a template.epub and I edit or add files according to the book.

I hope I have made the process understandable, and that it is helpful. It sounds simpler than some of the suggestions above, or using Calibre or Sigil.

Regards, Alex

PS And yes of course I make backups first.

I imagine as long as you don't touch the mimetype file this would work fine. Otherwise you are left downloading a command line version of zip and doing it the hard way. I'm an oddball and don't find it difficult.

Use epubtweak or Sigil if you want to poke around inside epubs. I've had mimetype problems with 7zip in the past (because of reordering of the files), though WinRAR has worked fine.

Alex, this post describes how to change fonts using external css references. You still need to modify the css, but don't need to embed the font in each epub. If you want to alter the default fonts you'll need to wait until PRS+ or a similar hack is ported over to the new models.

Thanks, Charleski.
- I'm comfortable with using an HTML editor, so don't think I could go back to using Notepad
- I agree that Jack's method is great; I've downloaded his pdf.
