Another way to get them in the proper order is to edit the Published Date in The metadata using Calibre. The Kindle sorts from newest to oldest.

If I want my books to show up from oldest to newest, I'd change the published date to look like this:

Book 1 dec 2010
Book 2 nov 2010
Book 3 oct 2010

And so on. It doesn't really matter what dates you use as long as they're in descending order

Then sort bt author and they will sort in the proper order (and not mess up your title sort)

I know several posters are successfully using this idea as well.

My messing around was to try and get Calibre to do lots of the work since they have added the social meta data lookup and catalog functions. I love this because I no longer need to do so much of it manually.

Since I sometimes travel internationally for 30 day periods, I often start reading an author and want to know which book to read next without having to go look up information. Keeping the list of books that I have within the collection folder for that author works best for me to start the next book on the fly. You'd think I could remember what books comes next, but as Abookreader says, unless the title is numbered or alphabetized, my brain freezes

cheers

Finally took delivery of my Kindle. yay! I say, this works pretty good for giving you an overall 'book' that explains a series.

I also just figured out a great way to get your books to sort in the correct series order. This assumes you have all your books available in Calibre and that you already have the entire series.

Quite simple. Add the books to your Kindle from Calibre individually in reverse series order. So, add the last book first, the 2nd last book next and so on, finishing with your Catalog overview book.

Now create your collection on the kindle, add your books to the collection and then sort your books by 'By Most Recent First. Bang. Your books are sorted in the correct order for your series.

If you don't have all the books in a series, well then I guess you'd have to remove the books from the kindle and redo the above steps as you get new books.

it is too bad there is not a By Least Recent First sort option. Then it would be easy to add new books.

Well, I just realized, as soon as you open a book, it becomes the most recent, so my idea only works if you never want to read a book in your collection.

Oh well.

I also ran into a hiccup using the symbols to name collections so that they would appear first on my Kindle when sorting by title. During both updates, to 3.01 and 3.02, the collections stopped sorting by the symbol until I went in and renamed the collection.
In example: I had named a collection ..Silva, Daniel and since symbols sorted first, my collections would be first nicely alphabetized appearing first on my K3.

After the software updates however, ..Silva, Daniel sorted with the "S's" when sorted by Title and sorted by most recent when sorted by Collections. After renaming my collections, .Silva, Daniel now sorts by most recent when sorted by collections and in correct alphabetical sequence on the first page when sorted by title.

Ah yes, Amazon needs a bit of work on Collections

cheers

Hi,

I wanted to thank you for this thread because I am thinking of upgrading to a Kindle from my Sony 505. I have only used Calibre to send ebooks to my Sony and I use collections extensively. I have a lot of fantasy and science fiction series that are displayed on the Sony as I see them on Calibre.

It sounds like managing collections on the Kindle is not as straigtforward as the Sony. What about Kindle4PC? Is there any collection managment system using that?

No Kindle4PC is pretty simple software. No way to create and display collections or catagories.

cheers

Hmm, thanks for the tip about Kindle4PC.

I might just wait a while before purchasing a Kindle. I am kind of OCD when it comes to my collections and if it isn't easy to do, I will go crazy. Or I might look into the new Sony touchscreen readers. My 505's battery is failing so I am in the market for a new reader.

Does anyone think Amazon will one day offer a collections manager in a future update?
