A week later, I changed the country to 'United States' and suddenly had full Internet access. I have since changed the country to 'United Kingdom' and can still surf the Web without apparent restrictions.
Would that work for the Netherlands as well? I also bought mine from Amazon.

To repeat, no it doesn't.

Feel free to point me where it says there which type of "internet browsing" you get in germany.

Unless you want to sell me that "Free Wireless: Free 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle." is in any way a clear and conclusive statement to inform customers that their country has "restricted internet browsing", because that is the only sentence there about the 3g connection.

Hmmm. You're right, it doesn't. It definitely used to for the Kindle 2. My apologies for the incorrect information.

Bought my Kindle via amazon.com with the 3g, so I could browse a bit when abroad. As I now see I cannot even browse with 3g in my own country, the Netherlands (except for " shop in Kindle Store') , so I don't have great hopes for my travels in the future.
Also have a Borderlinx USadress and did an experiment: changed my country on ' manage my Kindle" and sent my content to my Kindle.
Outcome experiment: free 3G-browsing and free delivery of free books via Whispernet. But next day I got an email from Amazon, asking to prove my US-residence.
As it was an experiment, I changed my adress back. I now know my Kindle is able to do everything Amazon promised.

Edit: can somebody make sense of that?

I am from Germany and i bought my Kindle 3G/wifi on amazon.com in the vain hope that 3G web browsing should work (at least for wikipedia, right?). Well Kindle 3G web browsing doesn't work in Germany, however it still seems to be working for most K2i models. So that was were my i reckon justified (?) hope it would work on Kindle 3 as well for Germany did come from...

So there isn't really much need for germans to buy a Kindle 3G Model at all.

@Psykhe: yup, did try it, they even make it easy to switch.
@veezh: beware !
@Verres: do you at least get en.wikipedia and the "browsing disabled" on other websites ? What about the shop ? If they don't work, it may be a problem with your unit.

Next episode, one day or two after ordering a single book (from the kindle), got the infamous mail about giving proof of residence. Not that I cared to hide anything (even put my french phone in there, just in case). So they *do* check -- when you order (that's what the email says: "I see that you attempted to purchase xxx while in a different country than the United States listed on your Amazon account.")

The funny thing is that I actually paid the book $0.10 more on the US shop (and another book I bought before changing my address, "Wearing Midnight" by Pratchett, seems to be only available as preorder there).

Anyway, I'm going to ask support about the 3G connectivity -- and beg them to at least give us our wikipedia --. the lack of information is annoying, and, as Verres says, there is little point in the 3G version in these conditions. But I guess the situation is a bit weird, having AT&T sims using roaming permanently ?

Psykhe: Did you try it? I heard rumors about amazon charging you 5$ per week if you use an US kindle3 outside the US.
Nope, but they send you an email right away about additional charges for newspapers and such, I don't remember the exact contents.

Then I may try putting an address in the UK (got one there not long ago, would'nt really be lying), or Romania, if it happens to work. Probably better wait a few days though.

I am from Bangkok Thailand, mine arrived on my birthday 13 September. It was paid with my Thai credit card and sent to Thailand, so it must be international version. I then registered it with us. account I have used with my previous us. Kindle2. All the archived library was transferred without glitch to my K3 via 3G. I try browsing with 3G and all is smooth. I hope I will be able to connect via 3G in Europe on my next trip there.

you can add my facebook "limonado" to see some of the pix I posted there.

Good luck to you all!

K3 International shipped from Amazon USA to South Africa, registered in South Africa, completely unrestricted 3G browsing in South Africa, right out of the box (no configuration needed).
