Did you just lump "Watchmen" in with Shatner's "The Ashes of Eden"?!! I have read both and wow... just... wow.

Comics follow Sturgeon’s Law just as much as every other storytelling medium does. But your odds of picking up one of the amazing ones are better in the library as they are trying to pick from that top 10%. Give a few comics a go, next time you're in there. You might be pleasantly surprised.

The Foundation Trilogy is still at the top of my all-time favorite SF.

I don't know about and prequel/sequel and don't generally read them as they more often than not don't live up to the original.....and particularly in the case of works written by other authors.
