However, my Kindle WiFi LG 3 just received 10 days ago went into a series of spontaneous resets after having it in motion for a time. Its being replaced by Amazon. It appears only the WiFi has this problem.

For those just ordering it the following seems to be the lot affected:

First 7 digits of serial number: B008A0A
Software version: Kindle 3.0 (515460094)
Sirmaru - mine is one of those, any chance you could explain what you mean by 'In Motion' please, so I can have a test myself

Mine is one of those too.

Just spoken to customer services. I wanted to check that (a) I didn't have a defective unit and (b) that there wasn't a firmware update that I was missing.

They offered to replace the unit if I wanted, but said that they don't think that it is defective - it's a firmware issue that they're working on - although there was no date given for an expected resolution. They checked the software, and the version simaru gave is what I'm on, and they said that was the latest.

I decided to stick with this unit and wait for the firmware update.

As with the other threads where you have posted this, this isn't conclusive of anything. The serial number covers all Kindle WiFis from at least the US store and maybe the UK store. The software version is the same for everybody. Not every Kindle WiFi on the planet can be broken so don't consider anything B008A0A as a "bad lot" as this is just causing panic.

Thanks for the voice of calm. I am going on holiday in a weeks time and am taking mine with me. I think I will buy a couple of paperbacks just in case things go a bit wrong, so my holiday isn't completly ruined. Jean Plaidy isn't available in kindle now anyway and I want to read some of hers again.

First TEN digits of serial number

Here are the first 10 digits of my serial number: B008A0A003

The problem could be related to that lot or be random in ALL lots. I only get the repetitive reset problem after walking a distance with the unit vertical in an inside jacket pocket.

The two Kindle 3G+WiFis I've got here with me at the moment both have a number similar to that which is B00AA0A003 so that probably again isn't enough to narrow it down.

Are you even sure that it is a widespread problem with Kindle WiFis? I know you have an issue but does the other person you know have exactly the same symptoms as you including the requirement for movement of the Kindle?

Mine has the same serial number. I took mine out on Wednesday, walked about quite a bit, was on the tube and it was fine. I've also been in the car with it and it was fine too.

This is usual for the Kindles. Amazon does not do wide spread testing before release because they don't want details of the device to leak to the press. Their initial firmware is usually mostly ok but with some minor issues. The good news is that any initial problems are typically quickly fixed by a firmware update.

Mine had two Bibles loaded on it: the KJV and NET.

Maybe that was the cause. LOL.

It also could be random in all lots. I believe the 10 digits are probably enough to identify a lot. The last 6 digits may be unique to each unit.

Thus, now I am tending to think its just a random assembly line problem affecting ALL lots.

You also just can't recreate the issues caused by your product being in the hands of thousands of real customers. A bug might only cause a problem every 1 in 5000 times you run the browser so unless you have an absolutely immense testing team, you're never going to see it during testing. I'm not too concerned that there is an update so soon after release and actually happy as it shows Amazon are still working on it. I've bought way too many devices which have had next to no updates because the company just doesn't care.

What specific assembly line problem are you alluding to anyway? The issue that your Kindle has with the movement? If so, how many other Kindles do you definitively know that it is this exact issue with identical symptoms?

never heard of the movement issue till now, so its not exactly down to a bad lot..........scaremongering.

There is a likely software bug that is being worked on and it is not isolated to wifi only, some wifi user have no issues, and I have 3G and have had a couple of freezes and reboots, nothing major and I was hammering the device at times, so no wonder it froze, wish my Sony 505 was as stable as the kindle3!! So far, the kindle has lost nothing on the freezes or reboots, no books, collection or bookmarks so it really doesn't worry me too much at this point, all my books still save the point I was at.
My sony wiped my collection and bookmarks when it rebooted, now that is annoying, the kindle just reboots quickly and goes back to normal, no harm done.

Amazon is going to make it right, one way or the other, so I wouldn't worry that you'll be stuck with a defective K3 or be significantly inconvenienced in the meantime.

I am one of the people Amazon contacted to try out '3.0.1', and though it is too early to tell if this has fixed the random issues I was experiencing, they would not even deliver a beta update like this unless they were confident that they'd fixed something. It's been very solid so far, and I intend to push it over the next few days...

Remember that by the very nature of the internet, you're going to get more people posting issues than you are genuine trouble-free comments. It's just the way things are.

I've had mine for nearly a week now without a single issue. It's a WIFI only unit, with a serial that begins B008A0A. So it's not a "bad lot". Remember that for every person with an issue, there are likely hundreds, if not thousands of people perfectly happy with their units.

Don't let comments put you off. And remember that Amazon has a 30-day return policy should you be dissatisfied once you've had the chance to make your own decision.

See this link:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97614

A full 78% of those responding directly at the Amazon site have rated it 4 or 5 stars. Just a few, 22%, have rated it 1 to 3 stars.

Even I would rate it 5 stars since, other than the repetitive reset problem, would class it the best of all eReaders out at this moment in time.

In my case Amazon is replacing the defective unit with a one day shipping unit. I am fully confident the replacement will have no problems.
