Forester's "Hornblower" books certainly aren't in the public domain. I would have thought personally that their depictions of battle were a little graphic for a young child; they were not written as children's books.

I don't know, they are pretty tame. They also have a lot about honor and duty in them. While many have some non-graphic death, it is certainly less than today's children see on TV/internet/video games.

They would be hard for a 7-year-old reading at grade level. I know my 7-year-old nephew isn't even reading chapter books yet. But if the OPs son is reading at a 5th grade (10-11yr) level he should be fine with them. I was reading Heinlein by then.

Another series of books I recalled that might be interesting to a young boy are the Tom Corbett space cadet ones. They are in the public domain too.

All except the final one in the series, yes. I posted an "Omnibus Edition" to MR a while ago. They are, of course, a blatant rip-off of Heinlein's "Space Cadet" which is my favourite one of his juvenile books. Alas, not legally available as an eBook at present.

The new Linda Sue Park novel _Archer's Quest_ is a lot of fun and a quick read.

I read them 50+ years ago and my recollection is that they were pretty old books at the time.

Sounds like he'd like "Redwall" by Brian Jacques. I know it's listed as book 2 in the series, but that was actually the first book written and really should be read before "Mossflower".

And, to put on my Salesperson hat, he may like "Damsel" by S.E. Connolly. Who is my sister! Here's an excerpt.

Good luck with the book hunting!

They're more recent than you might think. They were written between 1937 and Forester's death in 1966.

I definitely recommend you take a look at Leon Chameleon P.I. and the case of the kidnapped mouse by Janet Hurst-Nicholson. It's not exactly the battle book, but it is definitely adventurous, fun and educational. It's a detective story which both my son (5y.o.) and I (32y.o.) both enjoyed a lot. It is geared toward 7-11 year olds, so your son might actually like it. If you use e-readers, you can buy this book both for the Kindle as well as Nook (Nook Color offers really nice illustrations, too - I personally read it on Nook Color).
