Steven Erikson's Malazan Empire series (Garden of the Moons is the first book), or George R R Martin's A song of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones is the first book).

Both of these are 100x better than Goodkind's garbage.

I love A Song of Ice and Fire but man are they coming out slowly! I wouldn't be at all surprised if GRRM kicked the bucket before that series was finished.

This should be easy since I'm not a big reader. There are many well known fantasy books I have not read yet.

Other fantasy books I've enjoyed: The Dark Elf Trilogy, A Game of Thrones, Dragonlance series.

Thank you for your help!
It isn't exactly a fantasy, but a book called Dune by Frank Herbert is quite good. It's science fiction but there's quite a bit of overlap in the genres, especially evident with this book, and I thought it was a good read.

My wife is reading the last few books that we have by Terry Brooks right now and suggested they would be a good follow-on for Wizards First Rule. Currently she is reading Running with the Demon but has read the whole Shannara series and The Word and the Void series (Running with the Demon is in that series). Also if you are a computer person, the whole Rick Cook/Wiz series is a hoot and a half...

If you liked Dragonlance, I'd recommend:

Knight of the Black Rose (James Lowder)
Legend of Huma (Richard A. Knaak)

Those books are from my youth... I haven't been reading too much fantasy lately... and neither of these titles appears to be on the kindle

My son actually got me into the Dragonlance series. If you can make it past the, ah, "interesting" name choices, I'd agree that that series is pretty akin to Goodkind's.

And hey, I personally dug the first two in the Sword of Truth series, and I'm not really a huge fantasy guy! Although it may say something that I never soldiered on through the rest of the 10 or 12 he wrote that followed...

Not quite 10 or 12, despite how it feels - yes, the story perhaps did go on a bit - but quite as much as the other fellows' ..... (Wheel of Time)

I read the first few in the series... but, I kinda lost interest after that bad one that was all about this waif/loser who happens upon the Sword of Truth... too much time spent on that character, not not enough on the main 2. Anyway, that was a long time ago...
