I'm kind of wondering why they can't simply "share custody." Most DRM schemes allow multiple devices to have access to the books, so why couldn't each side agree to allow access to the books that were already purchased with a new account being created for additional books (or even a continuation of the old arrangement)?

Baen is pretty awesome, and I wish that more publishers/retailers would take their cue, e-bookwise.
Too bad much of their currently available catalogue doesn't really appeal to me, but they've been pretty decent about getting other publishers/authors in on Webscriptions, and maybe they'll end up being the go-to place for reasonably priced DRM-free MultiFormat sf/fantasy when poor Fictionwise finally dies. Also, just like with finances, it's probably best to main separate accounts in case of future dispute (50% divorce rate and all, and that's just from the people willing to make a marriage commitment in the first place instead of continuing to just plain shack up). Maybe a small "joint" one for those books which would be considered shared household purchases that everyone wants to read, but definitely keep your own stuff your own. |
