I don't think that Tolkien's work is available as a legal e-book of any stripe -- maybe Rowling is taking a cue from the Tolkien estate?

Sending a Reader to her daughter is a stroke of pure genius!

Maybe we should start a collection?

I've learned more than I ever wanted to know about the Harry Potter author from this thread.

As a result, shipping those books from Manybooks.net to the UK may be frowned upon in that country, because in that case nobody got paid for anything, and copyright lawyers and their friends on the benches feel that that is just plain wrong.

Well, phooey! Fine, then, we'll include the OZ books, and Lang's multicolored Fairy books. And a full line of Kipling. Jo herself likes Jane Austen and Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (and E. Nesbit, as already suggested), and manybooks/Gutenberg have them, so include those.

Ironically, she is aware of how good books can go out of print. Too bad she doesn't see the connection from there to eBooks.

Not that I have the money to make this happen -- I'm still hoping someone from Sony would see this and get the bright idea to donate the unit and books.

Perhaps it' actually an astute business plan! To release ALL the series right before Christmas bundled with the special "Limited Edition Hogwarts House Ereaders" for a special price of $549. It will even come bundled with extras such as: an new foreword by the author, Special Limited edition Micro Spellbook for containing all the series (or as we call them, 256k SD cards), Super Deluxe Limited edition Gringrots Security Cover (a thin vinyl cover or sack). And of course, each House will have it's own version so collect them all!

Then again, maybe I'm just to cynical about the HP marketing that goes on. (I like the books and like the enthusiasm it generates in people but there is a not-so-fine line between enthusiasm and fanaticism.)

Dan Brown has just incredible name recognition, EVERYBODY knows who he is, specially with all the hype surrounding his book/movie (at least at the time of the CES). I wouldn't be surprised if he was Sony's #1 choice.

I think what would really make her understand the futility of ignoring the ebook market because of piracy would be to send her a copy of her new book in ebook format within 24 hours of its release.

The way the last one was treated in the media, I doubt JKR is unaware of just how fast that will happen, and yet she/her publisher/both of them still don't seem to care.

Heh, very good, I almost missed the reference completely -- likely an effect of that SEP Field.

I think that would be an excellent way to get into legal trouble for violating copyright law!
