Anyway, the book went to the Kindle through Wifi and instead of putting it in author subfolder, it went strait to the documents folder on the Kindle. The file itself did have the azw-asin code and an .azw extention (the original was mobi).

Even though the file name was different, Calibre still recognized the book (through metadata probably) and showed the green checkmark for that book.
This is exactly what I encountered as well. When the email went to email@kindle.com - I kept receiving notices from Amazon regarding exceeding my spending limit, the notice said they (Amazon) the sent the doc to my free.kindle.com account. I went back into Calibre and changed the email address to email@free.kindle.com and now no problems. Also, the book I tested did come through as .mobi which is the same format as in Calibre.

If you have a 3g/Wi-gfi Kindle 3, how does Calibre/Amazon know whether to send it via Wi-Fi (free) or 3G (possibly chargeable)?

I have only found an option on my Kindle 3 to turn wireless off completely, rather than be able to select which it uses.

Or am I missing something obvious?

Since this was MY first eReader I read the userguide/manual before even receiving the K3.
IF a K3 Wifi/3G is connected to a Wifi network, then Wifi it is.
IF you're not connected to a Wifi network, then 3G/Edge it is ( if you have coverage )
If you want to check/test, just disconnect from your Wifi network(s) and see the change.
Cheers,

Error message when e-mailing from Calibre

I've been unsuccessful in e-mailing books directly from Calibre to my Kindle 3 and would appreciate any advice. I've used both "free.kindle.com" and "kindle.com" addresses. Books transfer fine via USB cable or when sent as an attachment to amazon from my e-mail program.

When testing my e-mail settings in Calibre I get this result:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\wizard\send_email.py", line 98, in test_email_settings
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 82, in sendmail
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 74, in sendmail_direct
IOError: Failed to send mail: error(10051, 'A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network')

File "socket.py", line 514, in create_connection
error: [Errno 10051] A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network[/FONT]

Thanks very much for any suggestions.

Yes, I'm having the same problem...

I've pasted my error messages in below:

Sorry to be a moron, but what do I do to fix this? I am so keen to get started using Calibre....Thank you...!!!

Another poster commented on how the K3 connects to WiFi/3G, but I've noticed that if you send an attachment to your @free.kindle.com account, it will not download to your K3 if you're connected via 3G. Instead, you get a notice that you have a document waiting.

I believe the document will download as soon as you have a WiFi connection, but I can't recall right now.
