Another major battery drain on Kindles (and smartphones too) is 3G left on when you live in a marginal coverage area or it is at least marginal within your house/workplace. I have to keep my 3G turned off on my Kindle DXG because it has trouble getting and keeping a 3G connection with our terrible AT&T service. Our cellular phones also have this issue. If the 3G radio spends a lot of time trying to connect you will see a significant battery drain. This isn't Amazon's fault. In my case it is the fault of a lackluster and outdated AT&T cellular infrastructure that has been overly burdened by the meteoric rise in use of smatphones.

Glad I read this thread. I have a few hundred books waiting to be DL'd from Amazon into the K3 when it arrives in a couple of days. I will definitely keep it plugged in while indexing is in progress.
I wonder if Amazon would somehow automatically stagger the downloads, or at least insure that they occur seriatim rather than simultaneously (yikes), so that the processing load is manageable? |

I did some calculations on Kindle 3 battery life and the battery should be good for at least 21 hours of light use and the light should not drain the battery when it's off.
It must have been the indexing. |

My K3 wifi has crashed three times since I got it Thursday. It has bad battery life. The indexing could be the reason.

When I read that people are loading 200-300 books at once, I get the feeling you have found a bunch of free or very inexpensive books. Can you point me to threads discussing how to find these books? I already know about the sticky thread about free and bargain books.
Got our first cover but still waiting for the Kindle with no ship date yet, sigh. Edit: Found the Links in Every Kindle Owner.... thread. Never mind. Last edited by jangell2; 08-28-2010 at 05:00 PM. |

I am so glad this thread came up, I loaded all 750+ books yesterday from calibre after the battery was fully charged and played around with my new Kindle a little before bed. After seeing this thread, I went to check the battery level, sure enough - only about 25%. I charged it again, unplugged it and the continued drain makes it look like it isn't quite done yet. No problems though!
I have read about this before and should have remembered, but forgot just like I do so many things that I am not using at the moment... ![]() |

Why? Because I can!
![]() No seriously, I travel more often that I would like and not all, probably less than 25%, of my books came from Amazon. I started keeping my library on my Kindle because I was never sure how long I was going to be gone or what I wanted to read next. Let's not talk about storing paper books.... ![]() ![]() |

I got my K3 yesterday and I have to say the indexing has been pretty fast. I loaded over 400 items (about 60 samples, 40 short stories) the rest mostly novels -- all but about 90 were done in six hours, and the rest finished overnight (except for a few topaz items I had trouble with, and ended up deleting and reloading one at a time).
One way you can tell how the indexing is doing is to do a search -- choose a "rare" word so it doesn't generate 500 hits, and when it gives you the list it will give you the number of how many titles haven't been indexed yet at the bottom. You can click to see which they are, and if they seem to be stuck you can delete and reload one at a time. |

I'll be keeping hundreds if not thousands of books on my Kindle. I plan to use it as a reference tool as well as a reader. I also look forward to the pleasure of being able to re-read a favorite book, or parts thereof, on the spur of the moment, wherever I happen to be. I can carry two p-books in my backpack; I can't carry two hundred or two thousand. Last edited by Viseguy; 08-28-2010 at 10:27 PM. |
