I suppose they could have called it "The Amazing Blast-O Read-O-Rama!!," but I like Kindle better. It's a little more subdued.

They could name them after vaguely wordy or bookish themes, like they often name cars after vaguely zoomy things.
The Kindle Alexandria Or the Sony Manuscript Or the PocketBook Milton Or they could call it the Amazing Blast-O Read-O-Rama - that would sell ![]() |

What bites me (besides tall dogs) is that device names and numbers do not give any clue what the device is or are down right misleading. Examples: PRS-505 suggests a 5" device (it's a 6 ") and PRS-900 suggests a 9" (it's a 7 ").

Probably. And I'm sad to say, I never noticed it.
"Kindle" is an anagram for "linked"! "Sony Reader" is an anagram for "A Nerdy Rose", which is likely less intentional. "Reader Pocket" is an anagram for "a erected pork". http://wordsmith.org/anagram/index.html |

I agree; I think those two names are pretty great, actually. They both call to mind those traditional warm, fuzzy feelings you get from reading. You know, settling down in a comfy chair with a hot beverage and forgetting the world around you. (I'm sure that's what their branding people told them, anyway.) Names with abbreviations and numbers just reinforce the gadgetiness of the ereader, and that doesn't really make for a great marketing campaign.

I usually think that the market should decide, and that the govt should butt out. But I don't think that the govt should allow the use of generic words as model titles.
For example, the Sony Reader and the Augen Book. My objection is based upon the fact that both of these devices are eBook readers. Suppose someone wanted to compete with Kleenex and called its product The Tissue? |
