Well, the whole iTunes-->iDevice paradigm is that iTunes is the hub, your devices connect to that hub.

As Ben noted, iTunes backs up all your iDevice data, and basically anything on your iPod/iPad/iPhone should also be in iTunes already.

If you have purchases you made on your iPod-iTunes always asks if it should transfer those purchases back to iTunes, without "substituting its content for yours".

I don't find it "counter-intuitive" or "ludicrous" myself, but obviously YMMV.

Even that lowered the kindle price. Since Amazon was prevented by the PUBLISHERS from continuing to sell ebooks at a loss to monopolize the market -- they could then afford to take smaller margins on the hardware.

Regardless of Apple, the book publishers were going to put a stop to Amazon's low balling of ebook prices.

But the PUBLISHERS couldn't have forced through agency pricing without Apple's collusion. And I dispute the idea that it lowered the Kindle's price. Amazon has always maintained the Kindle and Kindle store as separate entities, each one has to turn their own profit, and one does not affect the other.

Even if you DID back it up your personal data it's still on the dead iPad so you'll have to trust whoever the lowest bidder is for servicing iPad's happens to be at the time not to use your credit card acct to supplement their income.
It's a great deal for Apple but kinda sucks for their technopobic customers cause it's really not that difficult to pop the case and swap that battery.
Not being an iPad owner, this begs the question; how do you back up your personal information on a device that doesn't support USB? WiFi? 3G? Granted, all you media should be in iTunes, but what about other stuff? And if you say there isn't any "other stuff", that begs another question; why not?

I've never heard anyone talking about backing up an iPad, or iPhone, or iPod thouch either for that matter.

From Apple's iPad page http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html:
Ah well good to see Apple sales people don't know their own products. I was in an Apple authorised reseller a month or so ago just to look at the iPad and was asking about the built in battery and warranty and replacement etc. He said that unless the iPad battery failed within 14 days of receipt (classifying it as a Dead-On-Arrival) that it will cost you $125AUS to have it repaired/replaced.

Ok, based on this new information I take back my previous post. Thanks kjk. Still not going to get an iPad though (would consider it if they released iTunes for Linux, no way am I changing my home infrastructure to compensate for one new device).

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx allows you a good management of your iThing. I manage the music with Rhythmbox and no complaints so far.

Probably because every time you sync to iTunes, it makes an automatic backup of your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, unless you turn it off.

sounds about right

While there is no doubt a measurable chunk of iPad owners using the Kindle app, based on my own sales I'd put it more like 100 to 1. Thanks, Apple, for giving indie authors a competitive advantage for a while.

It's automatically backed up whenever you connect to iTunes. Not just the stuff you've loaded from iTunes, but everything.

Frankly I wasn't that impressed.

Its heavy, yet the battery life is only about 10 hours.

I can see where it is an apple gadget freaks delight, but I wouldn't trade my Jetbook for one. Its a status symbol more than a reader in my opinion.
To be honest, I've yet to see a tablet with a 10 hour battery life. All the ones I have seen/read about have less battery.

The publishers didn't need Apple, they were prepared to not ship ebooks at the same time as the hard backs. Since Apple went with the agency model, Amazon decided to do so rather than let apple have months and months to sell the latest books when Amazon couldn't.
