That's okay, when my wife went to B&N to buy my Nook (which I think is great, no complaints here) she told the saleswoman that she'd prefer a Kindle. The saleswoman said told her that any Kindle books she bought could be read on the Nook, making it sound like it was just automatic (and didn't involve stripping DRM, etc.).

And there are Kindle owners who've told B&N employees that they've purchased books for Kindle on sites other than Amazon, and been told that they're "mistaken". Or they say that Kindle can't send software updates wirelessly (it can). B&N employees who don't understand the concept of "public domain".

And what's with this "multiple formats" stuff? Nook only reads 3 formats. Yes it can take books from multiple sources. But it only supports EPUB, PDB and PDF (and PDB is just EPUB with B&N's DRM).

I've only had my Nook for a couple of weeks, and only bought it because I found that it can now read my books from Sony, Kobo and Borders, but my Sony couldn't read my B&N books because of B&N's DRM. (The hazards of all those reader apps on my iPhone.) So I found a great deal on a Nook on eBay & sold my Sony. But honestly, it's sad to hear about B&N employees who are either so ill-informed or willing to lie to try to sell their readers. Luckily that hasn't happened at the local B&N here, the employees I've talked to are just happy to have people reading on any e-reader.

The killer comment from the sales guy was:

"Amazon just wants to sell you Kindles, they don't care about the books, we do."

HUH?! Isn't that what you are trying to do? LOL.

Well, at least B&N is licensing its DRM to other device manufacturers. So, I suppose they could argue that they are more interested in selling books than Amazon. Which, to a certain extent is true. Amazon, though many people still think of it as primarily a book seller wants to sell basically everything it can. B&N, if anything, might be increasing its focus on books.

That being said, since Amazon does provide software for iPad/Phone, other platforms, they certainly are interested in selling ebooks even more than Kindles!

I talked with a B&N salesperson a couple of months ago at the Nook display in the store, and I felt a little sorry for him, actually. He was anxious to help me explore its capabilities, but it seemed like he had been thrown out there without any training or info at all. We kind of worked through it together. I didn't buy one, but he gave me the coupons for the free ebooks based on the fact that I had downloaded the B&N desktop reader. He was very nice, just not very prepared. I'm not sure it was all his fault.

It was a special promotion that ran for 5 weeks, I think. You had to go in the store to get the coupon codes.

Wouldn't it make sense to ask the person you talk to first if they have experiences with ereader? At least that what I would do if I am the sale person. Then build your sale from there. Seriously, I'll be banking more commission money than any of these guys any day..LOL
