Am in Oz - it's my own fault for losing the books, I'm not too worried, I'd read the first few already.
But do you mean if I take it into Borders here they can do a reinstall or something, I did the 1.4upgrade and that's when it all started, I used to be able to open these before. Willing to try just about anything. May have to do something about the ADE although, all the books on the old one are gone, do you think I need to reregiser with the book sellers so that I only have the one Adobe ID, I'm happy to buy some more test books and try again Thanks for your help |

My understanding is that Borders does not do this. There is info on this board about creating an SD card with 1.4 on it--involves working with linux. I guess you could try doing a factory reset (go to Settings===>Advanced on your Kobo) and then downloading and installing a brand spanking new squlite DB (see the sticky at the top of this forum).
At the end of the day though you will have to use the same ADE for all of the books you install. |

I'm having the same problem using ADE.
I upgraded the Kobo e-reader using the desktop program from Kobo, no problems with that. But, I also bought my Kobo in Australia with the Borders desktop program. I now can no longer sync with that, so I can no longer access the books I had bought through Borders (this program doesn't seem to let you download them). I then connected to ADE. Most of the time ADE won't even recognise my Kobo. There is no option to authorise the new machine. Occasionally, after de-authorising and authorising the computer and unplugging the Kobo in various combinations, I am able to get the ADE to recognise the Kobo. BUT, the Kobo will now no longer read ANY of my purchased books. They are ALL locked. I have tried re-installing ADE but that doesn't help. So, at this point I have spent about $500 (Kobo reader plus books) on a machine that can only be used to read free books I can easily get off the internet. This is driving me crazy! |

Take a look in the sticky section of the forum--there is a post about Oz-specific image for 1.4.

I have de-authorised my Kobo reader in ADE and re-authorised it... The books are still locked.
I downloaded some of the free books offered a few days ago, and I'm afraid I'll loose them, if I play around with it too much. I do have a different email address on ADE than on Borders. Can that have something to do with it? |

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's the problem; but I don't know how to fix it
![]() Maybe you can tell Borders to use the email address you used for ADE? Or, if you haven't used the ADE account for other books, maybe you can cancel the ADE account, and start a new one? |

OK... I have de-authorized ADE with the old email address, and re-authorised it with my current email address... Also done the same with the Kobo reader...
Still all the new books are locked... I'm just about to throw the thing in the bin... ![]() |

... and now that I've changed my ID to match Borders and Kobos website, I can't open any of the books... except for the preloaded ones...
I also cannot re-download, as 'this has already been fulfilled by another user' - me... ![]() ![]() |

You can only have one Adobe ID "live" on your Kobo at once. If you used two, then you will have to pick one to use full time and have Kobo-Borders reset all your purchases to match the one you have chosen. Once they do that, reset to factory defaults and download all of the books again using the Adobe ID you have decided upon and load the books onto the Kobo.
FWIW, my husband syncs his books (doesn't use Adobe) and the books loaded onto his Kobo just fine whilst I struggled with the locked content mess. |

This is just a joke. If I had known it would be this annoying I never would have bought the reader and all the e-books. Kobo help desk have been next to useless. Borders even more so! Edit: so I factory reset the machine and re-authorised as a new device for ADE and now seem to be able to access my books (except one). But I still can't get into Borders. I might contact them directly. Last edited by DrDiabolical; 08-30-2010 at 08:01 AM. |

@ DrDiabolical, glad to hear that the factory reset worked for you! ADE problems can be really hard to solve. It seems that people who did the 1.4 using the SD card method have fewer problems than those who update using the Kobo desktop. Factory resets help other folks.

Thanks for the help. Reading other problems and ideas and suggestions here helped. So I have also now been able to download my books from Borders. So I have the new firmware and all books back on my Kobo.
![]() Now, I just have the one book I can't seem to read on the Kobo for some reason. But I'll raise that separately. |

hey guys add me to the list of really frustrated kobo owners
![]() Have the exact problem as described and have done everything suggested but for some reason don't get the pop up box to deauthorize either. all was working well before the firmware upgrade - BIG FAIL from kobo have only purchased 2 books and the 1st one downloaded perfectly with no hitches what so ever but the second one has been locked and will not open even when it shows up on my kobo as a blank box with the title ?? I am at the point of wanting to ![]() what a waste of $$$ I should have stuck to buying the books in hard back as for kobo support well that is leaving a lot to be desired ![]() |

I did have the same problem as all of you are talking about.... To fix this, I did a factory reset, then I replaced the sqlite database, after that I logged on to the kobobooks desktop app and resynced the device....all purchased books from kobobooks were accessable at that point....but when I loaded my other books through calibre, they were locked and ADE wasn't alllowing access either. I uninstalled ADE, reinstalled it and reauthorized it with the kobo now everything works...but all old bookmarks were gone.
I have found over the years with working with computers, that sometimes the only way to cure a problem is start out with a fresh install and work from there....it can be a pain in the butt at times but doing everything from scratch in the proper order with no half measures or shortcuts usually brings success. Hopefully this will help you as well before the garbage man gets the kobo ![]() EDinNB Last edited by EDinNB; 12-26-2010 at 01:38 PM. |
