Fair enough, but no pictures, no go, I think. More likely to get an iPad, where the newspaper looks great.

Yeah, I know that's an unpopular idea around here, but here's why... I pay about $300/year for the newspaper, so if I can cut that cost in half, or less, I can justify buying a new toy. I do read some books, but hard to justify forking out a couple hundred bucks (remember, I'm in Canada) for the 3-4 books a year I read. Plus, I'd need 2, as my wife and I swap books all the time.

Does that make sense?

That makes a lot of sense. If you only read a few books a year, an ereader is not for you. The iPad sounds like a better choice.

You really need to try Kindle version of your newspaper. When I subscribed to The Washington Post there were pictures, not all of them but there were some.

Okay I have compared the two--Press Display of the Edmonton Journal on my computer versus the Kindle subscription to the Endmonton Journal.

(Press Display is not actually free; if you want to read more than 2 articles you need to buy a copy of the paper through Press Display.)

Okay, the upshot is that the Kindle subscription does have some pictures--but Press Display has more. The pictures come out okay in greyscale on the Kindle, but Press Display has them in color. Press Display has more articles than the Kindle Subscription does, but it's hard to be sure exactly how many more, because the sections in Press Display do not correspond exactly to the sections in the Kindle Subscription.

The front page of Press Display has 7 articles--the front page of the Kindle Subscription has 4. "City Plus" in Press Display has 2 articles and so does "City Plus" in the Kindle Subscription. "City Plus / Alberta" in Press Display has 5 articles (one of which is a sudoku puzzle that might not be doable on Kindle) "City Plus / Alberta" in the Kindle Subscription has 3 articles (in addition to the sudoku puzzle it is missing a sports article).

However the Kindle Subscription has a section called "news" that has 18 articles that doesn't directly correspond to any of the Press Display sections--it incorporates articles from A2, Top Copy, and Canada sections, so it's hard for me to be sure what is and isn't present.

I can get to the front page of Press Display on my Kindle but haven't had any luck signing in.

I tried press display with my iPad, using Atomic browser mimicking Foxfire 3 and IE 8, but I was not able to view the full sheets, only the thumbnails. It's designed to work in a desktop browser using a mouse, not a touch based interface. You may be able to get it to work, but it would be much easier on a laptop or desktop. I do have full rights to most of the papers on press display.

Those are some great direct comparisons, and greatly appreciated. I'd love to see how it looks on the Kindle myself, but short of buying one, I'm really not sure how.

I'm very, very appreciative of the comparison you did. Thanks so much.

Read Pressdisplay on Kindle without computer

Go to the Kindle browser, type in www.pressdisplay.com, log in. Go to a paper you want. On the left side you see "export to eReader" (better switch Kindle to horizontal view). Click on it and chose Kindle. It will download the mobi-version. Enjoy (Be patient, the browser reacts slowly on this site)

I'm in Canada and have many newspapers loaded via calibre. Pictures are there and they look great. I've also subscribed to a few papers through amazon... ditto.
Edmonton Journal is in calibre btw.

I've never heard of pressdisplay before but that looks pretty decent!

If you really want, I can grab an edition of EJ through calibre and take a screenshot either on the k3 or DXG.

I'm living in Europe and have a Kindle 3 and a DX (1st Generation) here with a subscription of International Herald Tribune via Amazon. And strangely enough: when I read the paper on my DX there are no images (or maybe one per issue). On my Kindle 3, however, are quite more images! The same issue, the same day -- but different behavior on Kindle 3 vs. DX. Does anyone have the same experience?
