At least with the Kindle, you get the 'you don't have sufficient battery' message on the screen, even when it is 'off' (like a screensaver). If the battery goes too low, it defaults to that as a screensaver.

I used to have a Sony 300 and a 505 but I do prefer the Kindle for ease of use. I have converted all my old EPUBS ok.
