I have a copy of a book dated June, 1979.

Inside the front cover is a page that among other things state:
The ink used to print this material has been chemically treated. It contains pigment which is affected by copy-machine light.

It then goes on to say that you'll be prosecuted, sliced, and diced.

Personal I never cared to bother making a copy of a page. But I'm willing to bet that the copy machine lights used today are different than those used back in '79.

This is not DRM, of course, not even medieval: this is a curse on book thieves, not plagiarists.

Would that Hollywood would turn some of its creative power toward the legal mumbo jumbo in the front matter of its DVDs as medieval scribes did for these books. Somebody might actually read the warning for once.
Loved that quote!

Nice find

In some cases, the Bible and any other book they might be wealthy enough to possess would be chained to the altar with big heavy chains. We are blessed now to be so wealthy as a society that we own rooms filled with bookshelves. And how amazing is it that we have problems finding space to store all of them? Of course, in that copious book wealth are mostly junk books not worth saving, but that is another conversation.

It is a classic. Davinci Code is the comic book version of it.

I would go for the classic "I curse you with the fleas of a thousand camels in your armpits" curse. Hmmm, if I ever publish a book I might put that at the front, but knowing me it would go like this "If you like this book and do not pass it on I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits".

I knew I recognized that tactic, but I couldn't remember from where! I need to re-read that.

Those books are still around, so the curses may be more effective than you suppose...

You are welcome.

The Name of the Rose was not so bad. Foucault's Pendulum, on the other hand, was a real challenge. It helps if you are familiar with a wide range of western esoteric traditions.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but our wealth of books are due less to our wealth and more due to the Gutenberg printing press.

In many ways, the press was the Internet of the medieval age.

An interesting take on this is in James Burke's documentary THE DAY THE UNIVERSE CHANGED, episode 4. Where the printing press changed "testimony" into "hearsay"

That is one of the books that formed my adult personality. I read it the frost time in a freshman biology class. Opened my mind to start thinking for myself about how the past - good and bad - shaped my beliefs and culture. I only just got rid of it last year during The Great Bookshelf Clearing.
