I think there isn't much to do about our prices given VAT and that the market is so small to begin with. But higher e-book prices than hardback is ridiculous, esp. 50-100 DKK. They clearly take their customers for idiots

Same problem in Norway. They're really not interested in selling e-books. Well it's there loss since I only go to Amazon instead and pick up an English title. I refuse to pay the ridiculously high prices they're trying to push to the consumers.

Sweden are in many ways way ahead of Norway. Forget about borrowing e-books at the library here. So far there's only test-projects out that's been going on for more than a year and not much seems to come out from these tests. Really frustrating.

Considering the size of the individual Nordic markets in conjunction with the diffusion rate of E-readers it is not surprising that prices are higher. Anyone remember the price of an Apple Lisa? That is the price you pay for being a trailblazer, on the other hand you get the satisfaction of telling your grandkids that you remember when books began to come in digital form. "And do you know how much Granny had to pay for that?"

Here in the US, the prices were frequently the same as hardcovers until Amazon got into the game and started selling some ebooks below cost.

Yes, as it is, it can only get better. Though the standard price of newly published harddcovers are abt. the equivalent of $35-45. Not possible to compare directly with US prices, of course, given taxes and the difference in the size of the potential markets.

And ahead of Denmark, too. ebib.dk is nice, but the selection is not thrilling. At least it's a step in the right direction.

Ebooks are considered to constitute a service and are therefore not covered by the lower VAT rate for books.

Because eBooks are regarded as an eCommerce transaction, not a product sale, and EU law does not permit member states to have reduced rates of VAT for eCommerce. The law was originally brought it to ensure that VAT was paid on music downloads; eBooks just got "caught up" in it.

Bummer!
Well Sweden has a general election coming up, I'm sure it will be one of the main issues being brought to the front by far-sighted politicians concerned about their constituents right to education and self-improvement.

Yeah, right!
