This is my fifth version of Lethe. I originally read one of the early betas. Perhaps it's time to digest the latest version and see where the changes are!

The changes are subtle, for the most part. I smoothed out some of the clunkier dialogue. Fixed a few inconsistencies. Typos, etc. Everyone who reads this hates book Chapter Two and yet I keep it as is, why I don't know. If I made it a prologue, no one would get beyond page one. Maybe I'll excise it some day.

As an aside, I find it exceedingly odd that whenever I post something on Lethe, downloads of Xenolith surge (but not either of the other books). It's like mosquito behavior. Lethe attracts and then repels.

So when are you going to add it to your sig? You may as well make it easier for the readers to access all your books! And then post all over the place for lotsa exposure

I've been a little shy about promoting LETHE, because I hear so much about how people are predisposed to hate first person, present tense narratives. Even some famous writers mock the technique as being overly gimmicky and trendy. That's not why I wrote it this way. I think it works in this particular story, but I'm not sure I'll ever try it again.

I think of PEREGRIN as simply a public service for those readers who wanted more of the XENOLITH story. I've been pushing XENOLITH because people should really read that first.

So far 2,767 people have downloaded XENOLITH.
Only 236 have tried LETHE.
133 have tried PEREGRIN

I hate to say this, but I've revised LETHE yet again. My brain unfogged and I found a way to make the opening sleeker, omitting Chapter 2 and removing some of the webs that tangled the readers' way. It's being uploaded to Smashwords as I write this.

It's still free, but only for a few more days. On October 12, it and my other books will only be available for the outrageous price of 99 cents (gasp!)

No, this should be the October 7 version. Looks like it's caught in the "meat grinder," number 15 in the queue of books to be converted. Should be ready soon.

LETHE has been tweaked once again.

I noticed that the first two chapters were still a bit obtuse. I've streamlined the opening to make it more accessible to a new reader and to make it compatible in style to the later chapters. It should be easier to get going with it now.

One odd thing that's been happening is that I've had a tremendous surge of LETHE downloads from the Sony ebookstore for no apparent reason. Very odd, since Lethe is my least popular work on B&N and Smashwords.

Note: It will take 2 weeks or so for the new version to show up here:

UPDATE: I'll never understand these quirks of promotion. Here, I'm promoting LETHE, but it's my first book, XENOLITH that is experiencing a big spike in uploads. Weird, how that works. Though I suspect that the first person, present tense of LETHE deters a lot of readers.

Finally, my first review from Barnes and Noble:

Anonymous
Fascinating read but too many questions unanswered

Three Stars
Posted January 30, 2011, 3:58 AM EST: Ideas of life after death can create vivid and unusual stories. Lethe is no different. It's a great book and one I'd recommend. My only dissatisfaction is how many relevant questions remain unanswered in the end.
