When I first got my replacement nook (my first one's touchscreen took a hit during a business trip), the right > button felt strange. When I pressed, it creaks like there was a piece of sand foreign object behind it. The other buttons felt fine. I use that button a lot I didn't really think too much of it at the time. Over time, it has "stabilized" and I haven't thought much about it. Now, I am scared it will crack like others.

Mine cracked as well. Both forward buttons. It was 1.3 out of the box.

The CSR, when closing the call, thanked me for my business and wished me well with my new Nook, and "hoped that the button wouldn't crack again." Startled, I asked him how many button cracks are they still dealing with, and he said he didn't have total figures, but he personally had handled upwards of several hundred replacements in the 3 months he's been in the Nook division, and some people were on their second or third (!) replacement nook.
2nd or 3rd replacement?!? That's aweful. I'm definately holding out for nook 2. If the buttons still look the same on the 2nd version, I'll probably be looking at other eReaders instead. I'm not one of those people that sees the newest/greatest thing, and simply has to have it. I plan on keeping my eReader for a very long time. As such, I expect it to not break for a very long time. It doesn't sound like the nook in it's current form can do this.

Yeah, I think this is a design flaw that might be exacerbated by air conditioning/dryness and frequent use. I only had my Nook for 2 months, but I was using it at least 3 hours a day, every day. Someone who uses a device 1-2 hours a week might never have a button crack.

But I mostly used the touchscreen swipe, not the buttons, so who knows?
