I think the answers here will be a little skewed, since most people actually owning a DX did it because they had a need/want for the larger unit. I've had 2 6" readers - Sony PRS-505 and Nook (for two weeks anyway), and once I got the DXG, I've never used the smaller ones again.
I prefer the larger size mainly for two reasons: 1. I enjoy reading larger pages, a la hard cover, vs paperbacks 2. For any computer books, PDFs, etc., there is no contest here Since I use it almost exclusively at home, I don't worry about the size - just lay it down on a table or chair arm, or in bed. On the other hand, my wife reads on the Sony still, and loves it, because she likes the paperback size, and portability. She will be getting K3 when it comes out... |

I don't know if I am going to get a K3. I do most of my reading at home or in an office or on a plane. As long as I can sit down, I see no reason for using a smaller Kindle over the DX. But I really like the larger screen.
If you are comfortable reading a paperback, you will be fine reading on the 6 inch screen. If you prefer reading a hardback, you will probably like the DX better then the K3. If you use mass transit a fair amount, the K3 will probably be easier for you, it is easier to tuck away and easier to hold one handed while standing. I guess I would say make a list of where you plan on reading and how easy you think it would be to read with a hardback or a paperback and make your decision based on that. If you order a K3 right now, you will be waiting for it to ship sometime around September 8th, at least that is the last post I saw. I doubt that you would get the import fees back if you were to return it. You might be able to sell it to someone else in France for the price you paid for it if it is gently used and they don't have to pay the import tax. I don't know if France has something like Craig's list or how Ebay works there. |

I *had* both, but I gave my K2 to my daughter when she broke her screen, so I've been reading 100% on DXG for a couple of weeks and will be until my K3 arrives.
I like reading on the DX, but it does get a little heavy for me during long reading sessions, and I find myself wishing for the smaller, lighter device. I flip the orientation often (so that the page turn buttons are on the opposite side) to give my weight-bearing hand a break, but my hands and wrists still get tired. I have small hands, so maybe man-sized hands don't have the same experience. Still, I *could* go 100% DX, if I had to, but I absolutely could not go 100% with a 6" screen. I have a lot of PDF files and most of them simply don't work for me on a regular Kindle. (Zoom and pan is fine for quickly looking at a one section of a schematic, but it's a beyotch to try to read something that way). I imagine that when K3 arrives, I will bounce back and forth between the two fairly evenly, using K3 for basic reading while reserving the DX for PDFs and books with tables, charts, and graphics. |

Thanks again for the replies...I made up my mind, and decided I would order the DX Graphite, maybe I will wait until the end of the month if I have the patience, just to see if they release the same firmware as on the kindle 3.
I was kind of surprised people don't necessarily use the DX if they have the choice (I mean in a situation where both are usable), I thought it would be natural to go for the bigger screen, but I guess it's a matter of taste. The (relative) heaviness of the DX is mentioned a few times, but the 30 days return policy would allow me to return if it really bothers me. Since I'll read mostly at home, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, and if I find myself wanting a smaller device for taking with me everywhere, well christmas is not that far away ![]() |
