TB video formats

The unit is so slow! Going from the home page to power off takes forever. Some web pages, like my library consortium here in Oregon, take up to 60" to access, let alone load.
The joystick is so slow and imprecise that when I get to a button, I have to diddle back and forth up and down half the time to hit it.

Hi Jim,
TB should also play WMV format video files. There is just a dearth of controls.

I find that just touching the power button seems to put it in a standby that does not seem to use power in terms of usual use. Then just touch it momentarily again, and it will turn on- virtually immediately. It also, usually, if you turn it off while inside an eBook, will return to that page. Most of the time. If you hold the button, it powers down- and takes, as you said, a while to load.

I think every one here is very nice too

I did the whole DRM routine; checked out two library books. One loaded, the other gave me an error message every time.

I agree re the unit's potential. When you talk of firmware upgrade, folks, do you mean the initial one that in effect, moved early adopters from beta to first release -- or has there been further improvement. My wife and I each have one, and we need more infor before deciding whether to throw them back to Heartland and let them grow up some more.

Jim,
If you paid the Heartland full price I believe it was $130 then my personal suggestion would be if you have the return time available wait until like September 2nd to see if Augen actually puts out a valid and viable upgrade if not "throw them back to Heartland" as fast as you can and get you money back.
I believe that K-Mart has given up on the “TB” most manager will give you a open box price of $65 on any units that they have in as returns.

September 2 upgrade?

Hmmm. Maybe I'll get a return authorization from Heartland (they take a week or more to get here) by which time it will be after 9/02. BTW: where is the infor re this purported upgrade? And thanks for your helpful info.

Jim,
Be careful with Heartland. I canceled my order there and had to get Paypal after them to get my money back. They claimed that they had not charged my Paypal account.

Thanks, Barnone.
I downloaded a new software set from the Augen site (Aug 26) and instructions for installing it (in more than usually haphazard English). Followed instructions scrupulously three times and failed every time. Can anyone who did this successfully post new instructions for the rest of us?

A good thing about the The Book

Hi all,

one thing that pleased me after owning the TB for a day or two was that after switching it on it didn't announce it was ready to go with a burst of "ta-da!" music.

My phone does (and I think most do); so too my Windows XP install; Ubuntu as well. I find this tiring and unnecessary.

The TB though, stays silent and either takes you to the last page you were reading or gives you a menu to pick from. Quietly.

I was just musing about the number of appliances/gadgets/thingies we have and how some chime/peep/buzz to announce their functionality, yet others do not.

Just thought I'd add that in, because the TB has some nice features (though a supportive, professional distributor is not amongst them) and this is something I find pleasant.

Cheers,

Hi,
Can I wipe the Augen back to factory status? I would like clear out my adobe id and other info. Also hopefully get the free books back that came with the unit. I've done the Format and Default options from the settings menu. I can't do the firmware upgrade at the moment because I'm on a 64 bit machine. Thanks.

If you do this and you have not backed up the free ebooks you will loose them, Augen did not provide a restore disk or file for the included free books.
