Original poster didn't mention what version he runs.
Anyway, sounds like a bug. I assume that mounting
file system on SD card prevents device from going
into sleep mode, or culprit might be in cron. With the
source on hand, would be trivial to debug.

OP is highly likely to be running 1.4 since 1.0 didn't auto sleep or power off...

The Kobo still auto sleeps and powers off from an open book, so I don't think that a mounted SD completely breaks these behaviours. But I definitely agree that source would be nice. Might be something to make the Kobo stand out from the pack now that it doesn't compete on price.

You are absolutely correct. When I got my device, I immediately
upgraded to 1.4, so cannot say how behaves 1.0. Since card slot
is there, I simply do not believe kobo made such a mistake.

Nope, I tried that thinking that it would stay but 15 mins later it shut off
