The original walkman amp was a hearing aide amp design made by Raytheon - who at the time had an equity stake in Sony. Designed by the same man who developed the first commercial hand held video recorder (RCA) and commercialized the pager from the device that was a pentagon downed pilot message system.

Oh - same guy was also the person you can blame for the origional popularity of the microwave oven. The oven was a major failure until he saw it demoe'd at Raytheon and said that they were going it the wrong way - pushing it toward fancy resteraunts - that it should be put to the smaller cafe's on bus and train routes that get a lot of traffic sporadically - and two test sites were set up in the Boston area just to do that. It was such a success that sales really started on word of mouth. I'm going to hear him lecture tonight about his experiences as Patton's forward observer and workign with the french underground.
