I don't know, there's a lot of new features on the k3 that seem to make this stampede a "rational" exuberance. In my situation, I had just ordered the Sony Touch and received it on tuesday. Then I read about this, and it makes me feel like I got ripped off when I compare features. So, back goes the Touch, and I'll happily wait for the graphite, wifi-only, k3.
I can also see this being a product that sells out and ends up with people on a waiting list. Don't quote me on that, but I have a feeling this could be a game-changer. |

I've owned the Sony 505, 300, 600, and 900 at one time or another. Ironically, my first Sony reader the 505 was the best of all of them. But Sony seems to have abandoned the 505 design for glared screen models. I'll keep my 300 since I doubt I could get enough for it to make it worth selling, but I already bought a Kindle DXG and I pre-ordered the new Kindle WiFi Graphite yesterday. The one thing that sealed my decisions was that Amazon is constantly upgrading their formware, but Sony rarely does that, if ever. That and the fact that the Sony Reader Store application is the most pathetic POS I've ever seen.
If sony does not release any new readers by the end of October, or if the new models follow the glared, touch screen design model, I think the market will collapse around them and they will withdraw from the eBook reader market like they did from the PDA market several years ago. |

I still think PRS-600 is a better choice. Just imagine - K3 has a plastic case and probably a plastic feel. PRS-600 has a much more robust construction. And touch... this is great for proofreading. Hope you'll enjoy K3, but you could have given a chance to PRS-600.

I gave it a 3-day chance. This proofreading project is a once-off thing, and will be done by the end of the year. Ultimately, I wanted it for reading in the long-term. I noticed the slightly worse contrast and sharpness compared to my 300, even though the glare wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been...BUT...the k3's pearl screen, + the $139 price point threw me over the edge and I changed my mind.

I've had a PRS-900 for 7 or 8 months and am over the poor contrast and glare.
At $139 I'll probably end up with a K3 for the better pure reading experience and much better store. |

I like my PRS505. Latest and greatest - for a bookreader - doesn't always give me the features I want. I don't care about wifi or always-on connection, and especially don't want to be hooked up into Amazon's bookstore for easy purchase (not that I have anything against Amazon in general, just don't like to be restrictred to them). Touch-screen may be nice but I don't see where I need it. Sony, make more 505s and sell them at decent prices.

Amazon is reportedly selling the new Kindles below cost, with the expectation that they'll make it up on selling books. I love my PRS-300, but I think unless Sony can convince a Borders or Barnes & Noble etc. to drop their own hardware and sell Sony's insead at a subsidized price, they might have a hard time competing in the world of $139 Kindles...

K3 will be another plastic cheapo
I also found somewhere that K3 will be sold below price. However, I won't go with them. Cheap plastic case is not very robust and I don't like this kind of stuff. Why putting all our eggs in one (Amazon) basket when we know we can buy or download for free (PD) books we can read on our Sony or Kobo or whatever reader.
OK,OK...Sony has the best case, decent screen contrast and (at least PRS-600) touch screen. They always go for quality (but their Store is not well equipped). And their readers are open for many formats. |

have there been many complaints in the kindle forum from users complaining about plastic breaking or something? Seems to me it should be fine, and keep things lighter weight, to boot? Seems to me the important part of each unit (the screen) would be equally delicate across all groups, leading you to baby both, regardless of what material the case is.
Don't forget you can sideload public domain books on the kindle as well, it might not do epub, but calibre does away with that problem right quick by converting them pretty darn well. Last edited by matt314159; 07-30-2010 at 10:09 AM. |

I would wait a little to see what other companies will release in a couple of months. I like the Sony design and feel when I hold it in my hand while reading. I never like the Kindle's keyboard design. It looks ugly to me. I also like the dictionary and touch screen of my PRS-600. Annotation and markup is exactly what I am looking for in an ereader.
If Amazon can release the Kindle 3 for $139 and $189, what's stopping B&N, Sony, Borders from doing the same? In any case, I am willing to pay a little higher for the next generation Sony. If Sony is smart, they would introduce a 9.7" with the touch screen feature that it has now in PRS-600 and PRS-900. That would make it a perfect "academic" reader. All the students will rush out and get one. No ugly design and cheap plastic for now.... |

After giving up hope of any future firmware updates for my PRS-700, I'll probably just consider my *next* eBook reader as a throwaway item. I may just buy the cheapest available, with an acceptable screen, that reads the format I want. When it breaks down, it'll probably be obsolete anyway, I'll toss it and buy the next generation cheap reader that reads the format I want.
The only drawback to this may be the format I want becomes obsolete. It's all a matter of space and convenience to me. My product loyalties are waning. |

To be honest if Bebook had released the Neo, or at least the specs, when I was looking for an eReader last year I would have gone for a Bebook. When I bought my Sony Touch I knew what I was getting in for with Sony, having dealt with them both personally and professionally. But Bebook was quiet about the Neo and other brands weren't as well build as the Sony or didn't have the features I wanted.
I'm not someone who orders the latest and (possibly) greatest as soon as it's released. When my Touch needs to be replaced I'm going to look around again and I will probably go for a Bebook because by the look of it their service is great with regular firmware updates. |
