Absolutely. The Kobo at $149.95 is obviously a dead item in the U.S. now. Not necessarily fair or right - but dead. I'm still enjoying mine ...
Long live Kobo. |

Yeah, the new Kindle looks good. Other than the ability to read library books it seems to be equal or superior to the Nook and Kobo on their strong points. Better battery life, roughly equal weight to the Kobo, wifi access, dictionary, etc, like the Nook. I am tempted to return the Kobo (after I finish my book!)...

I’ve been expecting a price poop at Christmas but the new kindle is going to speeding it up fast. The kindle is getting stronger on its advantages but what was lacking before is still lacking (No support forf epub, can’t read library books, no micro SD expansion). For me, the lack of capability to read library books is really a deal breaker.
The market is getting ferociously competitive; multi-function low cost Android tablets at the same price range with true web browsing, video display and the ability to read various ebook formats are emerging. When Nook WiFi came out in June, it had a good competitive edge. Now barely one month later, Kindle 3 arrives. Frankly, Kobo is so far behind the eight ball that it is not in the league. I really enjoy my nook but I can’t help but kick myself of not waiting a little bit longer. I don’t want a kindle; I want a more discounted nook. ![]() |

The library thing doesn't bother me because our e library system has absolutely no books I would want. The fact that it doesn't support epubs is a downside, but if you use calibre, doesn't that make you able to use them (just converted)?
I won't be getting the Kobo now. After playing with it for a good chunk of the day yesterday, it didn't live up to what I was expecting. Now that the Kindle 3 has come out, I am stuck between it and the Nook. The Nook I would want to soft root to get my files all in one place with good organization, the Kindle I would just have to convert files to mobi (I think). I wish some place sold the kindle so I could play with it to see how I like it. |

I live in Los Angeles and our e-library is excellent. All my books are free; they are either from B&N, or from libraries or “lend to me” by my fellow nook friends. Rumor says the Nook2 is due out September. To be competitive, they must match or beat the Kindle 3 price with the addition of some killer features. I have been telling myself to wait until Christmas before making the plunge but I just couldn’t resist. The e-reading experience has been terrific; no more hauling books around and no more checking in and out of physical books from the Library. Everything is so convenient at my nook or computer tips and I just love it. However, knowing myself, it won’t be long before I’ll again submit to temptation and get another ereader gadget; this time, I’m gunning for a 2nd gen iPad or an android tablet.

A coda for my tale:
I ended up returning the Kobo, because the new Kindle has basically every feature I liked about the Kobo, but is also better in a bunch of other ways. I liked the Kobo, but I didn't want to have something that I knew was clearly worse than another option (versus the Nook it was a much closer call). However, there is one big issue that hasn't been mentioned here: Borders USA store policy is not to take returns on the Kobo (not even with a restocking fee)! In other words, if you buy it and don't like it, you're stuck with it. That was pretty shocking when I went to return it. To be fair, the manager on duty ended up overriding the store policy and allowing the return, but it was very stressful. By comparison, Barnes and Noble has a very easy in-store return policy, and Amazon also allows returns, though you have to ship them to Amazon. Knowing that now, I would not recommend people get a Kobo at Borders. With basically every store in the US accepting returns, it isn't worth the risk that you'll change your mind and get stuck with something just because you bought it at Borders. |

Total nonsense. As a Borders Rewards member, I had SIXTY DAYS in which to return my mail-ordered Kobo for ANY reason to my local Borders store. IN WRITING. Long live Kobo. |

Then - using your logic - you should purchase an iPad, because it will do more than what you purchased. Or buy a library ... After reading your last post, I do not know if you will thoroughly enjoy any eReading device - 'cause there'll always be something out there with "more" features. I know there are better eReaders on the market - but I am enjoying my Kobo, because I knew what it did before I purchased it, and it is performing well for me. Is my wife enjoying her Kindle2? Absolutely. Long live Kobo. |

You know, I liked the Kobo. It was also imperfect. Usually I agree that you shouldn't wait for the latest and greatest, but learning within 3 days of buying it that something was coming out with a better screen, better battery life, better ergonomics, etc. was enough to make me think. Unlike the Nook, where some of the advantages came at the expense of weight and battery life, the new Kindle essentially matches the Kobo in those categories.
As for the warranty, I had purchased the Kobo at a Borders store, and when I went in, they said they didn't take returns on electronics. As I say, the guy was nice and eventually made an exception in my case. Now, it is possible that he didn't know that there was a different return policy on Kobos. I think it is also possible that Borders stores and Borders.com have different returns policies. All I know is that it was stressful to do the return, and I wouldn't want other people to try out the Kobo and go through that process. Again, I'm not trashing the Kobo. It is good. In some ways it is better than the Nook. In at least one way (library access), it will still be better than the Kindle. At the same time, it is clear that Borders stores are not giving it the same treatment Barnes and Noble gives the Nook. |
