Ho hum. What an original thought that paper had (along with Druid_Elf). As a long-time Apple user all I can say is same shyte, different day.

Apple-hater logic...

1984-2007: Don't use a Mac. No one uses them.
2007-Present: Don't use a Mac. Everyone uses them.

Pointless and flawed study... I quote

The Study

From March through May of 2010 MyType surveyed over 20,000 of its users on Facebook about Apple’s iPad to reveal the personality traits, values, demographics and interests that drive differences in opinion about the new tablet computer"

The surveyed was only people use Facebook and are "users" on MyType...... not a cross section of iPad owners at all. That would be like standing on wall street and interviewing iPad owners... and then proclaiming that most iPad owners were in the financial industry.... silly and pointless... not a legit "study" at all...

Heck, there was no mechanism to even determine if they were actually iPad owners.....

Angst - Smaller screen forces a lack of functionality. Simple example would be a database program like Bento. The iPhone version's interface limits it compared to the iPad version. I myself do not have an iPad but I'd like one.

There are some newer tablets coming out that will have that sort of price difference but it is not yet clear they will have the "same" functionality. That will certainly depend partly on whatever replaces Apple's App store, which has excellent selection and reasonable prices for most things.

Totally agree-IMO most Facebook users are selfish, so there's that demographic explained. (OK-selfish might be too strong. If I were using my own word choice I'd more likely say narcissistic, but I don't think selfish is an extreme stretch.) As for rich, IMO the iPad is still in the 'early adopter' stage & early adopters of $500 devices do tend to be better off financially than the 'common herd'. Rich (and wealthy) is an opinion, of course. When I earned $20K/year I thought those who earned $50K/year were rich. Now that I earn $60K/year I don't think I'm rich-I think rich starts at $100K/year. So, as I said, it's a matter of opinion. I will stand by my statement that 'early adopters' of $500 devices tend to be better off than average though. Whether or not the iPad is still in the early adopter stage though, I'll grant that that's still a matter of opinion.)

I have no idea about iPad owners, but I can imagine that early adopters are more likely to be rich and selfish than the population as a whole.

In regard to the survey, it may be true that Facebook members are in some ways not typical members of society, but the finding is that Facebook members who are richer and spend money on themselves for new gadgets are less likely to give to charity than Facebook members who are poorer. On that point, I don't see why Facebook members would be different from society as a whole.

The impression I get of Facebook is that it's a community of people who are all talking, but none of them are listening. It's like that guy at the party who won't stop talking about himself so you can talk about yourself ... times half a billion.

That "survey" isn't even trash; at least you can burn trash for power. It relied on data self-reported by a self-selected subset of another self-selected subset of a non-representative group. It's no more valid than posting a poll on MobileRead asking "Do you like ebooks?" and taking that as representative of the world population as a whole.

I am not an Ipad owner. I was merely irritated by the sweeping statements made in the article that inspired this thread and attempted to point out it's silliness by looking at the converse argument.

I suppose it was a failed attempt at sarcasm but then perhaps so was your comment.

I think, we can all agree that surveys like this are both hilarious yet slightly disturbing.

However, I do feel there is room for a survey which exposes the truly benevolent, caring and all-round awesomeness of those who own an iPad and a Sony 505.

I am taking for granted the extra superiority points awarded for London-based respondents.

Time to correct myself.
I was generalizing for "Apple" products being too expensive.
It is true that the ipad is a sort of exception. If you take other tablets / e-readers with the same functionality they are indeed in the same price range.
However, many of their other products are not. From the iphone through the ipod you can find alternatives which are way cheaper with the same configuration. Take for instance the first iphone, which was released here for 600 euro's, and was limited to 2G support (while most phones had already 3G support).
Only the new OS version of Mac (for iphone, ipod, not imac) supports multithreading (bit weird in my opinion).

But ok I admit, the ipad is until now a good product which comes at a decent price (until asus releases his DR-950 )

Do I care less about the quality or status of mX or MyType? No It's just an interesting article!

Someone else can send you the iPad. My bank account isn't quite thick enough to burn portions of it quite yet.

Seems those descriptions of iPad owners would apply equally well to owners of other ebook readers.
