Thanks! So glad yours is on the way too! I played a lot with mine last night and am amazed how nice it is for installing things with drag and drop. I also have discovered I really like reading landscape. I guess I will find out over time what I like best and which options. It has taken a lot of will power to let it charge since I want to play, lol. So fun!

Well Jodi, you can read while the reader is charging. Just use the always ask configuraton on USB and when asked, choose the chrge option, voilà, off you go. Have fun with your reader!

Thanks, I noticed I could but wasn't sure if that was a good idea on the first charge. It is good and charged now though. I showed my oldest son side by side my ipod and the reader in the sun and he was amazed. It really is wonderful. I've got some reading in this afternoon while my little one slept on me. I've also been playing with the key mapping.

Oh, I find it really difficult to do a double click on the power button. Any tricks for doing this?

Okay got it, all about the timing. I finally figured out that if I hit the second click just as I see the little light, then it works and I get the timing right.

Also received PB 360

After doing some research I picked up at 360 as it had the best combination of supporting formats I want (epub, html, pdf) and size.
  • It handles pdfs better than expected - about 70-80% of them are readable.
  • Its lighter and smaller than expected- I love reading with one hand on the subway
  • Its faster than expected - pdf page turns are faster for large pdfs than iphone 3GS or iphone 4, or my nokia n900
  • Calibre is an excellent tool for ebook management

Questions - for my large pdfs that I use OCR to covert to text - what is the best way to read them?

RTF, HTML or should I convert them to ePub? (They have images, tables and formatting)

Also how should I read comic books? Is anyone working porting a CBR reader?

Thanks

I am reading my OCRd pdfs as pdfs only with formatted text

For reading comics i suggtes to read it in landscape (cross) mode. On my own experience (and the of Longseman ) its readable this way.

Very. However, a CBR/CBZ reader would be orgasmic to have.

Depends on how much structural formating you retain (chapter breaks, TOC, etc); if you have simply a clean stream of text, RTF will work fine. If you have a lot of structure, you'll most likely want ePub (and FBReader180).

Thanks
I converted them from image files (png, jpg) to a single pdf. This way allow you to zoom in if text is too small. Reading in landscape can also help for this problem.

Good to read you're enjoying your reader so much!

Mine has arrived this week. I haven't taken the time to try out all the things I've read here. I've just been reading and reading! It's great!
When I can use both hands again, I'll try out some of the stuff I've read here. At the moment, it is too much of a hassle. But I'm enjoying myself very much just reading.

So glad you have been reading. I just got back from a trip and read quite a bit on the plane. I have to say I think I read faster on the pb since I can make the font larger. It is also great since I sometimes have it quite a ways away from my eyes if I am nursing my little one. Sometimes I think I wouldn't mind a little bigger screen but the overall size is so nice for what I use the reader for and I am enjoying it a lot.

I just want to say: Thanks for mentioning this! I've got my PB360 set for one-click = lock and double-click = main menu. I always had trouble with my double-click technique and I'd accidentally lock the durn thing Almost. Every. Time!

Now, I just wait for that split second when I see the light and, ta da (!), off to the main menu for me. No more locking by accident. Hurray!

Nice tip!

Thanks, again.

Marilyn

P.S. Hope you're still enjoying your "new toy"...

Glad that helped Marilyn. I had looked through the tips thread looking for something and then finally just sat and played with it.

I am enjoying my new toy. My dh's arrived as well so I got his set up. I just set up some folders for him in favourites as well so I will put things there for him so that he can find what he is looking for easily. I have the power button set to go to last 10 books so if he is in the favourites screen he can press that and when he is done, will come back to the favourites screen which works for him. I haven't seen him playing much with it yet but he has a bunch of paper library books on the go at the moment. Hopefully he will like it. He will probably use it more though since his brother just found out he has cancer so my dh has been sitting a lot with him at the hospital. It is so sad.

Anyways, thanks so much for everyone's help here. The forum has been wonderful for helping get everything set up quickly so I could get reading. I have been learning so much!
