Works for me.
How's this: The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein "The forest was ablaze, he had heard the roar of the dragon." |

wrap up
Coming back to the silly trick of assessing if an unknown book might be with some value, I think that with the help of Ea and recluse it has been shown that there might be a distinct probability that a good book behaves according to the trick (likelihood). We may expect that there will be a distinct probability that a book that is compliant to the trick is also good.
It would be nice if some of the members or their friends would use the trick in their shopping for Summer, and drop a word in the thread. ![]() One more thing. Doing this, both Ea and me observed that pbooks are alive and give a pleasure of their own in being consulted, with a very particular purpose in mind. Even for people that read just ebooks like me, and maybe Ea and recluse also. I consider this a good thing, that adds value to our silly game. Thank you for viewing. One last thing. The silly game is still on. ![]() |

![]() To really determine whether it works or not, I think we would need a large sample of books. Preferably chosen by blindfolded people to make the selection random. It wouldn't do to choose only "good books" or "trash". Then, a scientifically chosen(*) number of people will try to create a sentence from the beginning and end of each book. If at least 50% of these sentences make sense to a randomly selected MR overlord (a.k.a. moderator) the book will be deemed "good" and compliant to the hypothetical principle. *someone with a science degree selects a random number between 1 and 9 |

I concur.
Pbooks are alive. Every quote I posted came from my pbook library. Ebooks may be the cutting edge but they are cold comfort. My pbooks are old friends. I know them all by sight. By touch. Blindfolded, I can lay my hands on any one of them. A glance at their order upon the shelves speaks volumes about my state of mind at the moment. From "Raven" by Charles L. Grant "Past sunset in February, the worst time of the year. And soon enough they all would know." |

The order of my books changes. Week to week. Sometimes day to day. Always in motion.
The inside of my mind looks like an explosion in a library. It's funny that the late Mr. Grant's quotes work so well. An author of "quiet horror", out of print and forgotten. His books are dreamlike, and linger in the mind. He only had one bestseller in his career. |

A Single Man, Christopher Isherwood;
"Opvågningen begynder med at få begge dele kørt bort på en vogn, fjernet." (The awaking starts with getting both parts driven away on a cart, removed.) One Shall Not - collected short stories IX, Robert Storm Petersen; "Enhver piberyger vil have lagt mærke til, at -- bommelum, det var ordet, det sagde jo det hele." (Any pibe-smoker would have noticed that -- bommelum, that was the word, it said it all.) Last edited by Ea; 07-27-2010 at 02:21 PM. |

Children, you fill my heart of joy.
I showed the thread to Boss (she is getting her iPodTouch, so we can finally eat her face), and she told me "pbooks are: wireless, low power consuming and recyclable. They are on the edge of the Green Economy" As usual I was speechless. |

Anansi Boys, by Neil Gaiman:
"It begins, as most things begin, with a song, which lingered in the air even after they had gone in for breakfast." That one works... |
