I don't really have any problems with 7 hours, still a bit more than my average notebook or my UMPC.
But I wouldn't add reading on top, for this I stick to my ePaper units.
Really strange. I also keep my ipad at medium brightness and the wifi on, and I get 12 hours.

Hmmmm...maybe I've got a lemon.
I'm not just keeping WiFi on all the time, that's mainly all I'm doing: Constantly browsing the web, sending emails, downloading apps, ...

I have wifi on always -- I get about 12 hours of usage. No blue tooth and brightness usually at about 50%. When I read, I often have dimmer than 50% adjusted through the book app (usally iBooks or Stanza).

Battery has been no problem for me. It lasts "all day" with heavy use. I plug it in at night.

I think you have a lemon. I'm doing all those things too, with wifi AND Bluetooth on non stop, with brightness between the lowest setting and about 20%. I get 10 or so hours a day per charge, and I generally plug in at night with 20-30% of charge left.

Worth a call to Apple, perhaps?

Maybe brightness makes the difference. I'll reduce to your level and check.

Does battery drain faster if your wi-fi or 3G signal is weakish? My wi-fi sucks in parts of my house for all my computers, and my 3G is spotty at times. I was on wi-fi for days elsewhere and didn't have the same kinda dropped signals that I get in parts of my house.

I do have the same practices with 3G added. The iPad does work for a "normal" work day and add some reading in the evening. Then plug-in at night and start
again the next day...

I will be using the GPS functions a lot in the coming days. Might be interesting to see how that affects my overall autonomy (Probably quite a lot !).

With 3G it does, yes. The radio in the iPod will increase its transmitter power (and hence battery drain) to cope with a weak signal. You'll find that, if ever you go somewhere where there's no mobile phone signal, your phone will drain its battery in no time flat.

How old is your iPad? The battery needs a couple of full charging cycles first to calibrate itself before it reaches its full capacity. You probably know this already, but I just want to make sure.

Pretty much like everyone else, I get great battery life and charge overnight.... I try to remember to turn WIFI off when I'm not using it, and it does increase the battery life....

I tend to use Stanza for my drm-free books, being able to get new books onto the device via dropbox makes it more convenient for me than ibooks, also I like being able to adjust the brightness by scrolling down.

Crowl, how do you put stuff on iPad via dropbox? I've heard of dropbox, but don't know how it works at all.

You can upload to DropBox from any computer via a web browser (or client software). There is then an app for the iPad which will allow you to download the files from the web. You can then view them within DropBox if they are a supported format, or Open In... another app.

Thanks, Murray. Is it easy to open DropBox docs in Stanza?

I don't think there is any special support in Stanza, you download the file into DropBox then Open In... Stanza.
