I looked at the Free Library of Philadelphia's web site, but to do a search of ebooks they require that you already have a library card. Can anyone tell me whether they have an extensive collection of ebooks, and whether they are in ePub or PDF format? I have access to the Houston Public Library, but their ebooks are mostly romance, vampire, and how to succeed in business. I prefer bestsellers (except for the aforementioned categories) and science fiction.

Wahington DC has a huge collection for, as I recall, $20 per year. The only snag is that you have to show up in person to get the physical card. Renewals by mail after the first year.

Not so! You can browse the FLP's digital library here
http://freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com...owseeBooks.htm
without signing in. Their ebook collection (ePub and PDF) is great for the extremely low cost of $15 per year, and they have a lot of audiobooks too if you are into those. Highly recommended.

You can get a free Philadelphia card if you are a Pennsylvania resident and have a card from your local library that is an "Access Pennsylvania" card. I'm in Chester County and my card is an "Access Pennsylvania" card. They even mail it to you - I don't know how long it will actually take for me to get it, but the site said it would be mailed within 15 days.

Ooh. This great! Hopefully, I can cut down the money I spend on books. And get around the geo restrictions. .

I am from Australia and I was able to join the Free Library Of Philadelphia over the net without having to send anything in the mail. Read my post.

The Free Library of Philadephia is now $35 for non-residents. Guess they were getting too popular and decided to put a stop to it?

I don't consider raising the membership fee to be putting a stop to it

Though I joined when the fee was still $15.00, I find it to be an awesome resource and definitely worth $35.00. They're quick to respond to queries and very amenable to catalog suggestions. And I've borrowed many books from there that I didn't have to buy (and would not have wanted to buy ). I am definitely renewing later this year.

I guess. I agree that it still seems like a good deal. However, I really dislike that you cannot even browse what they have available ebook-wise (or at least I cannot find a way). So you have no idea whether it is worthwhile to join for an out-of-stater. And at $35 I'd be less likely to just give it a try.

Do they have a good selection of ebooks? Are the waiting lists loooooong?

Thanks, tubemonkey. I don't know how a person could find that place by navigating from the Home page. I guess I didn't try hard enough, but I tried for quite awhile. I looked in Products and Services; did Finds within the catalog itself, even specifying Digital Collection, and still couldn't even find the term "ebook" let alone an actual item. But thanks for the link!

On the homepage you click the box near the top that says Download Media. On that page you'll see an area that says Ebooks, with two options, Overdrive and Net Library. Overdrive is where you'll find the books from the major publishers.

A friend of mine is in Sevierville and her library has a lot of ebooks. It's close, maybe you can try there.
