The 2nd attempt, I believe. There was the "Librie" a couple of years ago although (I think?) that it was only ever sold in Japan. It was a failure largely because of draconian DRM restrictions placed on its content.

Yah, only in Japan, officially, anyway. In the case of that particular DRM, I think 'draconian' is an understatement.

I'll bet Sony didn't understand the market and thought very few people would buy the Readers.

I'll bet it was surprised by the number of older people turning into early adopters just to read in big type, and by the public's fascination with eInk technology. Indeed, it's quite a feat that the Reader is selling so well despite mediocre reviews of its software and the heafty price tag for a single-purpose reading device.

I mean it's hard to say whether it's selling "well", just that demand is outstripping supply. Perhaps that just says more about Sony's expectations.

I was kind of caught off guard by the reviews, frankly. I'm a hard sell on most tech gadgets these days, but I just *love* the reader. I hated reading on my back-lit PDA, personally, and not just because of the backlight. The reader isn't perfect, but damn it's good.

Then at least the third. Sony had an eBook reader in early 90's -- I think I bought one of the 7 they sold

It was a small mini CD-ROM drive and a flip up monochrome screen. The books came on cartridges that sort of looked like ZipDrive cartridges. I never saw much content for it other than public domain stuff and travel guides.

You are mistaken.

Fortunately they applied some of what they learned from the Librie...
