Glad it has helped!

I have had no problems since then, but will keep that solution up my sleeve in case!

Just had a similar problem with my 600 this morning, only 3 months old. Connected it and had a USB failure. The charge light did not come on.

Did a "Hard Power off". Now the laptop recognizes the connection, the power light is on and Calibre sees the device.

All is right with the world.

Scared me as something like this destroyed my previous 500.

Thanks.

I always thought that one of the least user friendly features of SONY's Readers is the way it needs to be shut down. I mean - the PRS900 requires you to go to 'settings', then 'advanced settings' to find an option to fully shut it down... I think for the first three months I had it I did not even realize I was just putting it to sleep. And I am sure other users are in my same boat.

And to the OP... sure, well, your tech support was not very bright. But... really... I understand you did not want to do a hard reset... but you did not even try shutting the device down? Please tell me I mis-read.

I don't think that's an issue - I never shut down my Reader and I'm sure most people never do. It lasts long enough as is.
That said, you could have read the manual to find out that you can just hold the power switch in off position for five seconds to shut down.
