As I told you I had exactly that same problem, where the jetBook Lite were stock on the opening screen. However I were able to make the update. I don't know how you have tried, but this worked for me:

What I did was that I got the update file, unzipped it to my harddisk on the PC and copied the three folders to a SDHC card. (Remember: you are not allowed to have anything else but the three folders on the memory card, to be sure, format the card first. I had the card formatted as FAT32, which worked though FAT maybe would be better). Insert fresh batteries just to be sure there are enough power to do the update. Next I placed the card into the jetBook, and pressed the reset button. Now I pressed the on/off button AND the right arrow button. Both buttons MUST be held down untill you see the logo screen (which must be the same screen where the freezing happened).

Now just wait. It is said that the jetBook should come up with a message telling you that the update is complete -- it doesn't! I just had the jetBook stay turned on untill it shuts down of its own.

Press the on/off button for some three seconds. It should hopefully turn on as usual.

If this is what you have tried, and it didn't work, I belive the fault must be a hardware- and not a software fault.

Sorry if this message is found annoying for you, but I don't know how you tried to do the update. As I said, it worked for me.

I have tried to upgrade a dead reader as suggested - nothing has happened.

Before I contact Ectaco can anyone, please, confirm that the button indicated in the sketch IS in fact the "right arrow" that I must press simultaneously with the on/off button?

Thanks for any inputs - James

Yes, that is the correct button.

It may take several tries to flash the JBL, don't be discouraged if it doesn't take
properly the first time.

Remember to do all the resets mentioned in the instructions.

You should hold both buttons past the logo screen until the update conformation
screen appears.

If it is not updating after a number of attempts, there is still one other procedure
you can try that lets you "reset to factory settings". After that you should be
able to do the update to the current firmware. Most of the time, if you get to the
logo screen, you can do an update. So I would try that a few more times.

Luck;
Ken

Received a replacement jetBook-Lite from Ectaco today. It appears to be a new one with a much higher serial number, a USB cable and new AA batteries. It appears to work ok and has the firmware version v0.16. Not bad service since I shipped the old one to Ectaco on 7/26/2010 by UPS and they received it on 8/5/2010. I hope this one lasts longer than three months.

Nope, cost $8.75 to send the old one back to Ectaco by UPS.

Return [to Owner] Shipping

If it costs $8.75 to return why do they charge $30 to send it back to you?

Or am I a special case?

(Actually I was charged $50 because I asked for it to come to England. When I learned it was $50 to England I asked for it to go to New England (Windham, NH) and was asked $30 (I would have expected that to be free), so I paid the extra $20 and had it sent across the Pond.)

That sounds outrageous! International shipping can be tricky, with customs, restrictions,
VATs, and whatever else, now a days, but $50 to England??

I sure hope they installed the latest 0.16e Firmware before they shipped it.

I had a warranty swap with Ectaco for my JBL. To send it back it cost ~9$. To have it sent back with FedEx (this is the only way they send you anything!) was the standard 30$. 50$ seems to me a bit much, since Hungary is more far away than England from New York (~2000km, give or take).
James: is it to be sent by FedEx also?

It arrived very quickly by Fedex, several days ago - but (cheaper) mail would have suited me as I was away. Budapest may be further (wish I was there - I haven't been to Matyas Pince for ages) but I had to pay $50 to England.

It does indeed have V0.16 firmware.

Serial number, in case anyone is tracking such things, is JB-L 1251n (for anonymity - n is an integer).
