If you're happy with reading W&P on an iPhone, that's great. Being "middle aged" I find that these days I really need a larger screen to read comfortably for long periods, so I read on my iPad. What's really nice is the way that the iPad and iPhone automatically sync bookmarks, so I can read on my iPad, and the next time I open the same book on the iPhone it'll be at the right page to just carry on reading.

You are completely right, of course. An even bigger question is why do 3G users not get the double-click task switch interface? Even without multitasking, it's still potentially useful for switching between apps, and of course, including it would have provided you with the missing screen orientation lock.

I also like being able to make playlists without needing to use a computer.

I wonder what the situation is for people with iPod touch 1G. Are we even able to install iOS 4 on our devices?

Indeed, there are people. I'm going to try the Whited00r Project's firmware.
