Clea's Moon, by comparison, is by a multiple award-winning author. At $7.99, do you feel that's a more fair price because the author is more well-known?
Yes, I would agree with that. Because I know the author has a strong reputation as a good writer, I'm much more willing to pay a higher price.

Incidentally, the fact that you're willing to listen to feedback is a major plus that I am going to file away for future reference.

Thanks for letting me know about the excerpt issue. Looks like we had it setup under "show at most this number of pages" instead of a page range. That has been changed, and you can now see pages 1-10 at Scribd. Much appreciate the feedback!

It's not a fair comparison. All the books you are referencing were published long ago (the most recent is Rankin's Exit Music, which was published in 2008) by major publishers and authors...and have long since made their money back. PRISONERS' BASE ( a book I adapted for television a few years back) was published sixty years ago!

In this case, we are talking about a small publisher with an original publication. Not the same economics at all.

Also, knowing that although it was $9.99 the title was 25% off at Smashwords and 20% off at CoffeeTimeRomance, did that sway your mind at all?

The only thing that has me a little puzzled is why it should make a difference whether we charge $9.99 being an independent publisher or Random House charges $12.99 for an ebook of the same length. The writer's work is the writer's work. I don't believe it should be necessary for an author to expect to earn $2.99 to $5.99 on a full-length work just because they are with an "independent" publisher. This would also seem to indicate that there is less value in being with us than a NY publisher, and I'm afraid I don't see that either. Perhaps you could clarify?

Thanks,
Jay
Hi Jay-

The word count doesn't make a difference to me, except that I expect it to be in the full novel range.

I typically won't spend $7.99-$9.99 for an author I've never heard of. I only even buy previous favorite authors for that much.

I said I've been spoiled. I used to be able to massage the Fictionwise system so that I spent an average of less than $2.50/book, even though some of the books I was buying cost $20. I will miss that greatly. Plus I buy most of the webscriptions at Baen, a "NY Publisher" and there I get 4 ebooks for $15.

There are many indie books out there that are a lot cheaper. I don't say that the book isn't worth $9.99 or that that isn't the right price, I'm just saying it seems a lot in my probably spoiled opinion.

I went to check it out on Smashwords after the decrease to $7.99, but now the 25% off code now only gives 7% off, or the same price I could have gotten the book at when it was $9.99 and 25% off.

Thanks for listening though.

We've actually reduced the cover prices now for both An Inconsequential Murder and Clea's Moon to $5.99, and that's likely to be our new full-length cover price going forward.

Please ignore the Smashwords system telling you that it's only a 7% discount. We took up that issue with them and that info was a problem with their display, not with the discount. You can still save 25% off both of these titles at Smashwords through the end of July.
