I picked up a refurbished Eee900a from Geeks.com for $180, over a year ago. It has
been a lot of fun to play with, upgrading it and converting it to an XP machine. For a number of things it functions very well, including some light gaming (Freelancer, Dungeon Siege2, Thief2, ect.). A good 64GB SSD and 2GB memory upgrade, didn't set me back that much, and make for a very responsive and functional portable device. (I haven't used mine for a few months but I just now turned it on and it still shows 65% battery remaining.) Asus has been my preferred Motherboard source for a long time now, due to the high quality of their products. If a poster's judgment were to find otherwise, I would have to wonder if I could find myself in agreement with his other pronouncements. Luck; Ken |

Indeed, the 90x models were a significant improvement. However, a (second-hand) 701G with a 4GB SSD and 512MB for RAM does account for poor functionality nowadays. Even EasyPeasy, a Linux distro which is tailormade for eeePC's, works sluggishly on it.
90x are much better machines. I wish I had been more patient and saved a bit more money. |

I have a 700 that i've upgraded with 2gbs of ram and a honking huge battery and I find the performance to be snappy for what I use it: web browsing, word processing, ereading, and local video. It is also very durable, surviving the abuse that my toddler doles out when he gets his hands on it.

I've had an ASUS Eee PC 901 unit for two years running Windows XP and 2 GB memory (no hard drive at all). It's been an ideal travel unit for me: it stores in the room safe in hotels and gets me via VPN into the corporate network when needed. Battery life is good and it's rugged. I will almost certainly replace it in due course with another ASUS netbook. And, I strongly concur about their motherboard business. Extremely well built and reliable.
As for SiPix in volume ... well, when it comes, it comes. In the e-reader space, however, things are moving rapidly and further delays may bypass the technology altogether. |

For many years my husband would only purchase Intel made motherboards for the desktop computers he built due to prior bad experience with other brands, but they were fairly expensive. Then he needed to build a really cheap computer and chose an Asus motherboard based on cost as well as specs. He was pleasantly shocked by how easy it was to work with and how well it performed. So now we very carefully check any available Asus parts when making choices and have been consistently impressed. We do not have a netbook or non-parts Asus product, but I am very much interested in the reader they announced just because it will have their name on it. I have read many of the doubts about the SiPix screens, but I am very willing to give Asus the benefit of the doubt and see what is produced before passing judgement. Since this is a new product for them, their reputation will again be on the line to people who never heard of them before encountering it. Also, Jinke has announced that the A6 and A9 units will use SiPix screens and they have quite a bit of the market for readers I'm sure they were very careful with any choice that would affect their reputation. Or so I hope...
