I agree with HarryT, I think the only way you get to embed whatever font you want is to use Adobe Acrobat. The process for defining a permanent "Sony Reader" print page, and defining the same page size in Word, are on this site and also on the Wiki format section.

I didn't have a clue until I read it here at MobileRead, and fiddeled with a document until I got the look I wanted on the Reader. Once I had the parameters down, any new work, is now a snap to produce.

My wanting to use adobe to change the .pdf files is not to get the font I want. My problem with the .pdf files on the reader is that they are just too small to even read and why I won't bother with them. If I could make it larger and easier to read that is why I would want to do this.. but since I don't have the paid version of adobe I can't do it anyways, plus I didn't see anything in wiki telling how to change the format in adope so that it works in reader better, but I just glanced after reading your post, but I went to the conversion sections to read and didn't spot it. Just looked again, don't see anything mentioned there...... guess I will try a search here to see what is around.

To follow up on this, I've been speaking to one of my friends, and he tells me that he has a low-cost program called "PDF Factory Pro" which has the ability to embed fonts, so it appears that there are solutions available at a much lower cost than Acrobat.

Hi Karen,

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there's any way of modifying an existing PDF file in the way you describe. What Bob and I have been talking about are tools which let you create your own PDF files.

There seem to be very few existing PDFs, other than those created specifically for the Reader, which will display well on it.

There are a few tools that convert PDF to say RTF floating about, though....

I believe, however, that the original question posed by this thread was how to display fonts not built into the Reader, and for that I suspect the only way is to create a PDF with embedded fonts. I don't know if Sony's native BBeB format has that ability or not.

I must experiment with this myself, because one of my (doubtless strange) interests is reading the classical authors, and being able to have books in ancient Greek on the Reader would be very good indeed. I can display them on my PC, using the appropriate fonts, so if those fonts could "accompany" the text onto the Reader that would be great. The nice things about ancient Roman and Greek authors is that they are all well out of copyright .

I'm sorry I did not make myself clear. I was referring to creating my on PDF files, formated as to font and page size to be easily read on the Sony Reader. I render most of my documents in RTF but produce PDF for one of two reasons:
1. to include graphics, pictures, etc., and
2. to preserve layout and/or fonts

Hope this makes it clear.

The BBeB format does have an option of embedding fonts, but it seems it's not actually implemented in the Reader. At least, I wasn't able to get it working.

To create things with Acrobat you need the Professional version which is more expensive than the reader. The free one most of us have, Acrobat Reader will not do. But when you install the Pro version it installs an extension in Word's menu to open a file directly from there and convert it. They always manage to make us spend do they!

Two quick points.

1. Since the current fonts in the Reader are mapped to specific types (Modern, etc) no other font files will be used in the normal display. If we wanted to replace one of the fonts (say Comic Sans for Swiss) we would need to rename the Comic Sans to the same file name as the Swiss font and replace the Swiss font file in the reader. (Hopefully keeping a backup copy to restore if we need to.)

2. Many of the files currently on my Reader were converted from PDF files to RTF with ABC Amber PDF Converter. I'll put the link up in the Wiki. I then used Stingo's RTF macro to complete the formatting process.

Just as a note for those who don't have Adobe Acrobat (i.e., the professional tool, not just the reader). The easiest way to create a PDF then would probably to use OpenOffice. Alternatively, use one of the free PDF printers (e.g., ? CutePDF).

My personal favourite settings are:
Page size: 90 mm x 115 mm
Margins: 0.05 inch = 1.27 mm
Font: Georgia (size 11)

As for EDITING an existing PDF, you will probably need to invest in Adobe Acrobat.

Cheers.

I think igorsk's method (I think there's a link to the thread way above somewhere) allowed for flat out adding additional fonts. It's been a while since I read the discussion, and a good bit of it went swish over my head, so I could be wrong.

I just rechecked the other thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...1&page=3&pp=15 and it seems that for the present that the fonts shipped with the Reader are protected so we cannot yet overwrite them.
