With Goodreader on an iPad, PDF is pretty usable.

I know eink isn't the best for pdfs, but the only reason an ereader is attractive to me is because of the eink (I stare at a computer all day at work).
I would REALLY like a Kindle DX for the obvious screen size, but if this eBay bid doesn't come through (more than $200 is out of the question for me).

It's between the Nook and Kindle 2 now. Right now Nook is looking better since I am an android fanboy

I would say any review on the Nook prior to at the very least March '10 is a toss. Actually some Prof. reviewers have went back and reviewed the Nook again after the V.1.3 update and most have shot the Nook up to the head of the pack in terms of the best e readers.

here is one example, Cnet's. http://reviews.cnet.com/e-book-reade...?tag=mncol;lst

the page turning is pretty darn fast on the Nook. I bought mine post v1.3 so I was good to go from the get go

Thanks for the reference. Was going to get one until I read another thread on MR and realised that B&N does not ship to Australia

I ended up getting a Kindle DX off eBay for $250. I figured, for my wanting to read the pdfs and comics, the larger screen would be worth it for the $100 extra. Now, to just wait for the shipping and review this sucker for myself, in the meantime I get to organize Calibre

Thanks for all the input guys, I really wanted to get the Nook, but this just seemed like a steal.

Buying now or waiting is a very interesting question.

I have been looking at a number of units:

iPad
Kindle 2, DX, DX Graphite
Nook
PocketBook 301, 302, 360
BeBook Neo
Onyx Boox
Sony PRS300, 600, 900, 505
Netbook (Convertible to tablet)
Archos Tablets
iRex DR800SG, Iliad v2

I am struggling because I am finding that the prices don't make a whole lot of sense. The iRex units are generally more expensive than the iPads which are more expensive than a fully functional laptop with a bigger screen, more RAM, a larger hard drive and a more powerful chip. I know you pay for convenience, but a factor of 2 times is ridiculous.

The Onyx, BeBook and PocketBook options are still $200 - 300 while their counterparts from Sony, B&N and Amazon have dropped significantly in price even though you generally get 3G for free from them. I know that the bigger companies can make a lot of money on the book sales where Onyx and BeBook have to make a profit on the units, but still 2 - 3 times is ridiculous.

I think the market is still try to work itself out and it gets cloudier and cloudier with bigger screens and more tablet choices just around the corner.

I have been cycling between buying an iPad for $500+ and buying a used 505 or similar for < $100. I may end up doing just that to let the market figure itself out in the next 6+ months.

LOL, your definition of "out of the question" is questionable.

Enjoy the DX!

Great price for the DX! I think you'll like it. I know a lot of people gripe about the PDF support on DX, but for my purposes it works well. (Though I've never tried to read comix on it.)

Hope you like it!

Haha yeah I know, I told you I'm indecisive! But after demoing the 5" and 6" screens I really thought it would be worth the extra money at that price. It's not that I don't have the money, it's just I was thinking I didn't NEED the larger screen. Now, though, I think if I would have bought one of those, it would have left me envying the larger screen still...so I just trick my cheap mind into saying it;s worth it

I'm still waiting for it, but it should be here soon (shipped on Tuesday!)
