So that means you could purchase the book and email it onwards ? ... Saves worrying about any geographic restrictions that there may be...

Kindle or my favorite, iPad...

Put Skype on it and you'll be able to communicate for next to nothing.
And you can install: Kobo, Kindle app, Stanza, Zinio for magazines and of course iBooks.

I thought this charge was stopped a while back - so now if you want to buy a book for your Kindle you just click the "Amazon shop" on the Kindle itself, find the book and click buy. If you're going travelling then you'd definitely want a decent case for it. If you both read the same material then you can share the same account and read each others books.

If the country they're going to is supported by Kindle then I'd get a kindle otherwise I'd probably go for the Pocketbook 360 on account of it being well protected and small enough to travel about with.

Don't think so - I think it was just a charge Amazon added to cover transmission costs. They've now decided this just wasn't worth doing. See forum comment on this.
