It's got a new higher contrast screen and the color of the casing has been changed. As far as I can tell that's it. If there are any software differences we won't know until someone gets their hands on one.

If that's the only differences on the hardware side then there won't be any differences in the firmware. If they do provide any new firmware then this should go out to k2 owners as well because it would be costly for them to support 2 different firmwares.

Hm, I have a new one arriving this morning which was ordered last Tuesday. The timing of all this will be very interesting - should I open it or not? Might be asking CS a question later today.

in addition to what was mentioned above, KDX2 is a teensy bit lighter and comes with firmware releases 2.5.5

Not to hijack, but I would have to agree that a K3 is about to be announced....
I've seen an increase in those obnoxious kindle commercials across just about every television channel. I think Amazon usually does their new product announcements around August, last time they did have a press event, at least when the K2 came out I think they did... I don't think most of their stock is hitting the retail circuit, I think they did that push about 3 months back. |

Good theory! It's probably the most concrete thing about K3 that's ever been said and it's still very vague to talk about it.

I think we will see at least one more kindle announcement over the next four to six weeks before xmas 2010. It could be an increased feature "K3", or it could be a dirt cheap K2 (most desirable price point would be $100). I haven't got a clue as to which way they'll jump.
There is an internal dev project code named "Shasta" that comes in two flavors: with wifi and without. You can google on shasta+kindle to get what additional info exists. The one thing I wish they would do is provide a PDF reader capable of reflowable font size changes equivalent to the Adobe or Nitro PDF readers. If they did that, I would truly be in hog heaven. EDIT: I've been really digging in to the preparation of PDFs for use on my DX US. I've come to realize that neither the Adobe nor the Nitro readers on the PC are reflowable -- it's just that the target page size of most PDFs is smaller than the physical screen size on which PC PDF readers display so considerable zooming is possible. The DX screen size is roughly A5 paper size which is smaller than the page size of many PDFs -- this causes the kindle to scale the page down to fit, and font sizes become too small to be comfortably readable. Adobe does have a reflowable PDF specification which is used in some phones, but a lot of PDFs are not compatible with it. Many textbooks and technical books are typeset to page sizes close to A5 so readability of these is not too bad. There are quite a few things that can be easily done to prepare PDFs for reading on the DX. There is not a one size fits all for every document source. I am preparing what I have learned, and when finished I will post it in this forum. Last edited by eboyhan; 07-23-2010 at 01:42 AM. |
