Why don't you just put it in a cheap case, scott? It totally fixes the problem. I know you might say "why should I have to buy a case?", but is it not worth spending $5 to convert your "pet rock" into a useful device again?

why didn't apple address this problem before they shipped them rather than selling a turkey? why keep denying there is an issue and telling us "it's just the bars"?

yes. i could spend $5 on a case to fix the issue, but as i said, what i feel is worse isn't the issue to begin with, but the way apple is handling it.

Those are excellent questions, and should be addressed but, in the mean time, those of us who have the iPhone 4, such as you and me, have to face the world the way it is, rather than the way we think it ought to have been.

Personally I think that, even with this minor issue (not "minor" in the sense that it shouldn't have happened, but minor in the sense that it's so easy to fix), the iPhone 4 is a superb device. I'm not going to return it, because I don't know of anything comparable on the market that I could replace it with.

What are you going to do? Return it, or get a case and have a usable phone again?

@Scott....

If it is as you describe (I have to assume it is) then Apple needs to do something. The whole bars thing is just more BS.... If it is useless, take it back... no point keeping a paper weight.....

i haven't decided yet. i still hold out some weak hope that apple will admit there's a problem and do the right thing. but this morning's PR announcement doesn't bode well for that. returning to my 3gs is not an option so i have to find something else on AT&T or jump ship to another carrier, something i've often considered.

i am going to make it through this holiday weekend with some steaks on the grill and a beer in my hand and worry more about this next week. as jobs pointed out, i have 30 days to return it. i hope there's not a huge line on july 23rd. lol.

Have you considered taking back and trying to exchange for another one? By the way people talk some phones seem to be effected more than others.... and some say not at all... so perhaps a different one would be better.... Something to try at least....

Since I have the iPad, my iPhone is not as big a deal to me as it was. At some point I may just get a low end Android. All I really want from a phone now is phone calls, and ability to tether to my iPad.....

I'm with you on the steaks and beer hope to start both later this afternoon!!!!!

One thing to consider is if the "formula" that the IPhone uses to determine the signal level is off, especialy at the low end of reception. The IPhone may cut of reception because it thinks there is no signal when there really is.

IE if the IPhone software thinks there is only a signal level of .5 and shuts off but the signal is realy 2.3. Correcting the software will help in some situations

I have never heard of such a thing... can anyone confirm this? Sounds good at least, but hard to believe Apple "overlooked" this for the last 4 years........ It would be great if true....

All I know is that I've NEVER had great phone/data reception in SF..the signal bars were no indication one way or another of whether I could get reception (as in, it could show no bars or 4 bars-3G...that didn't mean a web page would load or an SMS would send )

i'm aware of the lame "signal bar" excuse apple is offering up now. my problem is call quality and disconnection. it didn't happen on my 3gs in my house, no matter how i held the phone, and it easily happens now if i hold the bottom left corner. making my bars look taller isn't going to fix that.
