My guess.
Spoiler:
It's a circle, so cut it in half, 1st cut.

Stack one half on top of the other half and cut it in half - 2nd cut.

Now you have 4, 1/4 pieces. Stack all the 1/4 th sized pieces on top of each other and make a 3rd cut.

Ta Da! you have 8, 1/8th pieces.

Congratulations Javed, exactly right.

I'm going to be away from Internet access for the weekend, but I'll have a really hard puzzle for you all on Monday — assuming I can work out the answer myself by then!

I'm late to the party and I'm afraid there's no cake left.
Imagining there's still cake though, I would do it like this:

Spoiler:
Use two cuts to carve a cross on the cake, cutting it into 4 equal pieces.
Stack the 4 pieces on top of each other, and cut the whole stack in two with one cut.
I now have 8 equal pieces.

Where's the next puzzle, then?

I have no clue how to solve it, so I just bought a cake and ate it myself while quietly weeping in a corner.

It's a trick question. There is only just one fruitcake and it just keeps getting passed around. It's so hard by now that it can't be cut.

Yes, you have the right answer.

As for the next puzzle... well, I know what the question is, I just haven't worked out the answer myself yet!

Hmmm... Why not post it anyway then? Not as a puzzle for each of us to solve in spoilers, but as a problem we can all discuss together. (no promises that we'll actually solve it of course, if you're still stumped.)

So long as there is a possible answer.

Not that I have any chance of getting the answer anyway judging by my previous performance.

Well, I know how to solve it, it's just complicated to think about. I'd rather be sure I understand exactly what I'm talking about before posting the question.

However, I will post it by this time tomorrow even if I haven't completely worked it out myself.

Whatever you decide is fine by me, you're the puzzle master after all

It does sound a bit discouraging though... We'll find out tomorrow!

The new puzzle is up! Who knows — after the prisoners puzzle, you might find it easy!
