Another possibility has occurred to me and being an amature programmer I think it's validity very remote. However let me bring it up. I've noticed as I go through the upgrades from v1 to v1.1 to vRC3 that the dr.ini file doesn't seem to change as much as I would think it should. Like many posters here (I suspect) I've tried many of the 3rd party apps and some of the "hacks". Some of these install lines into the dr.ini file. All of these lines (enabling xjournel, djvu and more) are not there after the update (downgrade) to v1. But all the lines that are v2 specific ARE still there as is at least two of the "hacks". To me this means that the update is not a complete replacement of the OS (even though I format the card before updating). So, just maybe, one of these settings is causing the problem directly or indirectly. The first posting below is a saved v1 dr.ini (personal info removed) and the second posting is what is now being written when I update to any version.
Code:
[deviceinfo]
product_type=DR800SG-US
serial_number=CACYJ-M4GXF
software_version=1000
kernel_version=1000
micro_bootloader=1.2
micro_application=1.2

/apps/er/sys/flightmode/flightmode_mode=false
/apps/er/conn/cdma_activated=true
/apps/er/private/ids/account/email=
/apps/er/private/ids/account/password=
Code:
[deviceinfo]
product_type=DR800SG-US
serial_number=CM6KC-XXPKJ
software_version=1010
kernel_version=1010
micro_bootloader=1.7
micro_application=1.8

[registry]
/apps/er/notepad/pen_size=3
/apps/er/sys/display/rotation=clockwise
/apps/er/sys/power/standby_if_plugged=false
/apps/er/sys/power/min_standby=15
/apps/er/sys/flightmode/flightmode_mode=false
/apps/er/sys/global/list_languages=English;
/apps/er/sys/global/is_first_boot=false
/apps/er/sys/global/list_locales=en_US;
/apps/er/sys/index/add_with_metadata=false
/apps/er/sys/ctb/showdir=sdcard
/apps/er/sys/ctb/show_sdcard=true
/apps/er/sys/ctb/viewtype=iconview
/apps/er/conn/cdma_activated=true
/apps/er/uds/enable_zooming=true
/apps/er/uds/enable_scribble=true
/apps/er/uds/show_lookup_info=true
/apps/er/uds/show_add_note_info=true
/apps/er/uds/page_margins=20;20;20;20;
/apps/er/uds/confirm_delete_note=true
/apps/er/private/adobe/username=
/apps/er/private/ids/account/email=
/apps/er/private/ids/account/password=
The two "hacks" that I can see are the "rotation" and "standby" settings. However, many v2 settings are in place here as well. So, my thinking was that because they are v2 settings their affect is not seen when running the v1 system, but when I update to any v2 system whatever code that might be causing my problem then becomes enabled.

This is all mute if Gertjan finds the problem is with my pdf of course, but I find that possibility even more remote.

Is there a way to restore the original system completely? That would disprove the somewhat ridiculous theory I proposed above.

The installation of an update replaces the complete OS, but not the part where settings are stored.

In Settings -> Device Management use Reset Settings to remove all these settings.

That being said, I currently can't think of any way how these settings can affect the rendering speed/behaviour. But testing might prove me wrong

@ThR: i mean that i install first the dr800sg-1.0-build1000 and the dr800sg-default-content again (i assume that's the standard software and/or basic software), after that i do update-dr800sg-verizon-0629. that way my device is working fine again.

it's very weird that it suddenly starts to act like a granny after an update. if i use the foregoing trick, it's ok again. i also mentioned that i've got another device, exactly the same and treated the same, and that one has absolutely no problems. i don't get that...

I've seen something weird happen a few times since installing RC3. I haven't done a lot of investigation to see if I can find any pattern, but a couple times I've gone to wake it up from sleep mode, and instead it does a full boot. That part doesn't bother me too much, but when it does I also notice that it seems to have lost the current page I was on for a few documents. It appears to take them back to where I last was when it previously did a full boot, instead of remembering where I was before it went into sleep mode.

I never noticed this happen until RC3.

When done from v1.01 it did remove all the v2 lines.

After reseting the settings (while in v1.01) I installed the RC3 update. After the reboot I opened that pdf (medium font was recalled), and it was very slow ... taking minutes to show on screen and minutes to change pages.

If there is anything I can do to help myself or help your efforts let me know. I could post the output from ps and dmesg while RC3 is installed, maybe while the pdf is open if that would help any? You haven't said and maybe you haven't made any conclusions yet, but I'm assuming that your navigation of this pdf is more or less normal, making the pdf itself faultless?

Thanks

Yes, it should. Though if you swap SD cards, it will import the settings stored on it.

We were able to reproduce this difference between the v1.0x and v2.0 firmware browsing your document. Next we will check if the delay is in the new Adobe renderer or caused by changes we made. Hopefully the latter.

Hi - I just got my irex 800sg, and i'm really happy with it. i installed RC2 first last night and then RC3 today. i find page flipping v fast on pdf documents, but with RC3, somehow page turns on epub are slower. (a pause of couple of seconds or so) but i'm new to the device (and didnt play with it long enough even on RC 2).
I have a qn though. I'm not US based, so I sideload my b&n books. on the Books general view, I found i had to open each file one by one, so that titles and book covers will display properly. Fortunately I didnt have a lot of books.
But on the SD card file - inside the folder structure where I find my b&n books as well, i found titles not displayed properly at all. They were shown as number series on some files, others had names but with underscore etc. I had to manually go in and edit the file names on computer. Is that normal? This occurred on the RC2 update. By the time I went into RC3, I had manually edited it. But I'm wondering if I have to do that with each new book purchased!

After my last post following rc3 install, i think the page flips on epub is ok, but I get the occasional message of unable to generate thumbnails for some files..
There is still also the bug when opening pdb (b&n) files, where it seems to take a long time to open large files, keeps counting pages. The bible -6,000 plus pages bought from b&n - took maybe half hour to open! sometimes in the midst of counting pages, it seems to get hung, and i have to reset, and resume counting. real test of patience.
but no major complaints, i love it!

I've managed to find a work around for reading that pdf file I sent you. I load it into Evince, print it to a post script file. Then I load the post script file into Evince and print it to a pdf file. When I use that laundered file in my DR800SG it loads and pages quick enough, even after adjusting the font size.

The only thing I can see that is lost during this swap are any links that are in the original pdf. So, I no longer have a usable toc. I can get around that with bookmarks more or less.

Maybe this will give you a clue as to where the real problem is. There are other conversion possibilities that may yield better results, I'll get to some of them soon if I can.

It's definitely a combination of document complexity and Adobe renderer. Some early tests showed that your document produces better results, but navigation and rendering is considerably slower with Adobe 9.1 when compared to 9.0. It does not necessarily account for the complete page flip delay though. Analysis is ongoing.

Just a quick question. With the previous updates I've noticed a change on the font size (bigger) because the new firmware changes the letter type.

With the RC3, the font size went back again to the beginning and looks smaller, is that possible?? I must admit I prefer the new letter type from the last firmware...I always thought the medium size was too small. The difference between medium and large was too high...

Thanks,
Alex

Did it again to me last night, right after I had charged it. Not sure if that's related. But that could explain why it's only happened a few times so far, I've only had to charge it a few times since installing RC3. Not 100% sure that's the trigger for this happening, yet.
