You already KNOW how it will be used in the future. It will be used to advertise - just like DVDs of movies.

I don't find this surprising at all. If you can't beat them (or compete with them), try to make some money out of them! At the end of the day Amazon is in the game of selling books. They can see how this goes without actually putting any money into developing their own hardware, if it takes off, then throw some money at it.
Clever. Oh, yeah, one type of books that would really benefit from colour and some multimedia is kids books - both early years and learning books (encyclopaedias and such). |

This will work best for how-to's, travel books, etc.
I also think the analogy between DVD works here for "extras". I've always enjoyed the director and screenwriter voiceover options for DVD's - I like the idea of being able to get inside the author's head when they are writing certain scenes. This could be a nice way to do that. |

Plus, I see paper books with ads all the time. Not a huge deal. Usually at the end, like it ought to be. |

The birdsong book makes sense, but I'd have to see what they added to William Styron's Lie Down in Darkness that Styron would have wanted to include if he could've.
![]() I was really keen on DVDs with extras when they first came out, but I quickly got over it and realized that 99 times out of 100, all I wanted was the movie. Since then, producers seem to skip extras on most movies, so apparently that concept proved to be more trouble than it was worth much of the time. Really, I'm happy to just get the book and, if I want to know more about the author or whatever, to go the internet at home. I'm talking about fiction, here, and the stuff I usually would read in paperback. Travel books, picture books, textbooks, reference books...I can see multi-media being helpful with those. |
