The term "sci-fi" has long been considered pejorative. Some people use it today without realizing that, but to many long-time fans, it's highly insulting both to the genre and to the people who enjoy reading it. "Sci-fi" is a term applied to hokey, Buck-Rogers-y, often juvenilistic, trash. (come to think of it, the Sci-Fi Channel might have named itself very aptly)

"Sci-fi" is neutral to people who don't understand its past and context, and highly insulting to those who do. Depending on who you're talking to, it can be almost the "n-word" of science fiction fandom. "SF" is neutral to everyone. Why insult people when you don't have to?

Huh. Interesting. Guess I am "outside the box" as I've always said (and typed out) "science fiction". I see "sci-fi" and I know precisely what it means, I see "SF" and immediately think, "ahh, a short story of some type".

Thanks for the explanation!

**EDIT** -- a bit of clarification, I have never said or typed "LOL" unless I'm quoting someone or mentioning in a post like this one. To me, "Sci-Fi" is just like "LOL". I know what is exactly meant by "LOL", just as I am of someone saying/writing "Sci-Fi".

Goodness, I don't think I'm making any sense..... Maybe I should just put the keyboard down and walk away.

For the OP, Baen is the best, but tor has some free stuff at tor.com too.
My own site has my fantasy book #1 of my series posted, but that's it.

About Sci-Fi, I never cared, but that is the meaning associated by some, SF=real cool literary stuff, Sci-Fi is a monster movie. A bad one.

Smashwords also has sections for these genres: Science Fiction & Fantasy: http://www.smashwords.com/books/category/875
Thriller and Suspense: http://www.smashwords.com/books/category/874
Some books are free, some books are paid. All of them should have a sample of some kind and come in several formats so you can try before you pay to see if you like the writers work.

...also I often write Sci-Fi, but I say Science Fiction... so did my Grandfather who was very into it. Perhaps this is a regional issue? And SF would never make me think Science Fiction off the bat, either.

I'm usually more likely to say Science Fiction than sci fi. In my opinion both or either is much more preferable to "sy fy" which is one of the sillier things I've seen done in quite a while

Interesting. I've been a science fiction/fantasy reader for decades (btw love David W., looking forward to reading the new HH) and used to work in a book store. Never heard this before from any of my "geek" friends. Wouldn't have a clue if you said SF. (And anyway I like Buck Rogers, lol).

I do know that many people are insulted by the stuff that gets classified as sci-fi/fantasy which is really neither - not every book which takes place in the future is really "speculative fiction" Of course the lines between genres are really starting to be blurred these days.

fwiw "SF" has always been my acronym of choice, though of course I recognise Sci-Fi.

No pejorative aspects to either in my circle (regional NSW, Aus)

These sites have a ton of science fiction and fantasy books.
Some real hard core science fiction as well.
