I almost never have more than the change of a twenty in cash (which is used only for fast food joints.) Everything else is debit.

cheques... Those were those paper thingies, right? Those haven't been available here since 2000, as paying with PIN became the norm.

Shops stopped accepted cheques in the UK a few years ago, after "chip and pin" card terminals were introduced. Cheques are still used, though, for a few things like sending payments to other people through the post. I probably still write out half a dozen cheques a year for various things.

I have a Visa Debit Card, but I also have a budget...

The budgeted money for my household I take out in cash, and that has to last me for the budgeted period, which is two weeks... If it doesn't and I find something I can't live without, I use my Visa Card...

On the day I take out the cash I do most of my shopping, and really only have pocket money left... I don't want to have a lot of cash in my house.

For smaller traders cheques are often the only way, other than cash, for payment. My wife, for instance, is a tutor and payment is only viable with cash/cheque. It would be too costly to have a card terminal !
One advantage of cheques in this circumstance is that there is a paper-trail....

I haven't used cheques for years.. Anywhere I need a trail, I use my Debit Card...

But I do understand your situation. Many years ago I taught young kids to play the recorder... I charged $5 per session, which was paid in cash.

yes, that's the kind of situation, (though the amount is higher .... ). It'll also upset the 'oldies' and their giving cheques to grandkids etc.....

The UK has set a date for the total abolition of cheques - I think it's 2017.

I don't know if it's just personal cheques, or everything. Yes, I too wonder how people will deal with large transactions; I don't know how cheques will be replaced for that kind of thing.

Presumably by the time we get to the deadline there will be alternatives, such as bank-to-bank direct transfers that actually work ....

They've been abolished for 10 years already here. All transfers are either by mobile pin (even larger amounts, but you need to notify your bank in advance for those), or by bank-to-bank money transfers, either by phone, or by use of electronic banking.

Home purchases are done with a notary. No physical money, in any form, changes hands. Only bankaccounts... When I bought my car, I made a phone call to my bank, and asked them to transfer the required money to the car owner.
