I think that when the ebook business will definitely lift off, the rule of thumb will be something like "there ain't such thing as a public domain"....

Why should they extend it? New works are entering into the public domain year on year all over the world in countries with a life + 70 copyright term. If M. Mouse & Co are the issue, why not simply grant a longer term for corporate copyright, and leave individual authors well alone? It's not been a problem in other countries.

You misunderstand me. What I meant was that you will be breaking US copyright law by uploading it here. MR can legally host it, but you can't legally upload it. Of course, whether that bothers you is entirely down to you.

... from the US. You can go to Canada (or any other country where it is public domain) and legally upload from there

Mexico has a "life + 100 years" copyright term. Surely it would illegal there, wouldn't it?

I'd say it is better than 50:50 that anything published from say 1970 will never become public domain in the US.

I didn't know that, I assumed it had life+70, since I hadn't seen it mentioned otherwise... I'm correcting my previous post then.

Something entering the public domain benefits a very large amount of people by a relatively small amount each. Something remaining protected benefits a very small amount of people by a relatively large amount each.
Governments tend to act to benefit small groups of clearly defined interests, rather than large un-coordinated groups, as the former can lobby more effectively than the latter.
